Diving in South Africa
Diving in South Africa is great if you like action! There are several diving destinations in South Africa worth exploring, including Protea Banks and Simons Town. Moreover, the Sardine Run, which takes place every year along the coast of South Africa, is a unique experience for divers and nature lovers.
Protea Banks is one of the most popular diving destinations in South Africa and is located near the coastal town of Shelly Beach. It is a reef with a number of challenging dive sites, including Raggie Cave, a popular spot for spotting sand tiger sharks. Other animals you may encounter while diving at Protea Banks include hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks, bull sharks, eagle rays and sea turtles.
Simons Town is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town and is another great diving destination in South Africa. It has a rich history because of its role as a naval base and has some of South Africa’s most remarkable dive sites, including the kelp forests of False Bay, where you can see octopuses, lobsters and other interesting underwater fauna. You can also dive here with sea lions, blue sharks ánd mako sharks. Diving with the great white shark also used to be offered here, but rumor has it that the 2 frequently spotted orcas (named Port & Starboard) have scared away the white sharks.
The Sardine Run is a unique annual event that takes place along the coast of South Africa. It is a migration of millions of sardines along the coast, accompanied by an impressive array of predators such as dolphins, sharks, seabirds and even whales. Divers can participate in the Sardine Run and witness this fascinating event and dive with the many predators chasing the sardines. It is important to note that the Sardine Run takes place only in June and July and is only suitable for experienced divers.
In short, diving in South Africa guarantees action and spectacle.
