We are making this special expedition to Northern Norway with a group of Dutch and Belgian travelers accompanied by underwater photographer Thomas Van Puymbroeck. Even before departure we will get to know each other so that we can board the MS Virgo as a group and experience this unique Arctic adventure together.
During this period, large schools of herring migrate into the fjords, followed by orcas and humpback whales. That makes this area one of the few places in the world where you have the chance to see these impressive animals up close, both from the ship and snorkeling in the water. The rugged fjords, winter landscape and short days make the experience extra special.
During the trip, Thomas shares his knowledge and experience with the group. He gives practical tips on underwater photography and helps you capture special moments with orcas and humpback whales in the best possible way. Between activities there is plenty of room to share experiences, discuss photos and learn more about the behavior of these animals.
Aboard the MS Virgo, a comfortable expedition ship specially equipped for these trips, we explore the fjords daily in search of activity in the water. Each day is different and determined by nature, weather and whale sightings. That is precisely what makes this trip so special.
Available spots
There are still 5 available spots for this trip.
- 3 single cabins
- 1 superior suite for a couple
Best travel time to snorkel with orcas
These expeditions are conducted only between October and December. Late October is a good period, as orcas are frequent in the area then due to the annual herring migration.

Day 1 | The journey to Tromsø
Oct. 21, 2027 | Trip to Norway & arrival in Tromsø.
Today begins the group trip to Norway, Tromsø to be exact. This is the gateway to the Arctic region, located 350 km above the Arctic Circle.
If you fly from Brussels, you often have 1 short transfer in Norway and the total trip takes about 5 hours. Also from Amsterdam, you often have a transfer before arriving in Tromsø. The trip takes 4.5 hours.
It is recommended to arrive in Tromsø a day before the boat sets sail, hence the trip begins on Oct. 21 and the boat departs on Oct. 22.
However, this way there is plenty of time to explore the city! Tromsø is known for its beautiful Arctic cathedral, the Polarmuseum and its cozy streets with stores and cafes.
Day 2 | Aboard MS Virgo
October 22, 2027 | Aboard MS Virgo
Today we can board the boat from 16:30. After boarding, we will start with a briefing about the trip, safety procedures and facilities on board. This is also a good time to get acquainted with each other. We have the whole ship to ourselves, so it will undoubtedly be a fun week.
The same evening we set sail for the fjords in search of orcas and humpback whales.
Day 3 - 7 | Snorkeling with orcas and whales
During the next five days in the far north, we will explore together one of the most impressive nature experiences there is: snorkeling with orcas and whales in the Arctic fjords.
In winter, large schools of herring migrate into the fjords, followed by groups of orcas and humpback whales. Each day we explore the area with the expedition ship and zodiacs, looking for activity on the surface. Along the way, our expedition guides share their knowledge about the animals’ behavior and explain how to enter the water with them in a respectful and safe manner.
When whales or orcas are spotted, we get ready to jump into the cold water. In dry suit, we board the zodiacs and sail to a suitable spot. With some luck, we can then snorkel among these impressive animals as they hunt for herring in the clear Arctic waters.
The chances of seeing whales and orcas are also high from the ship. From the bridge and the spacious deck we scan the horizon and as soon as animals are spotted, everyone on board is informed. The deck also offers wonderful opportunities to photograph the scenery and animals. Of course, those who choose not to snorkel can join the zodiac to observe and photograph the animals up close from the boat on the surface.
During the trip, the guides provide an inspiring lecture program on whale behavior, research and conservation, among other topics. In addition, underwater photographer Thomas van Puymbroeck will give lectures and workshops on underwater photography and share practical tips for capturing special moments in the water.
The dark hours in the Arctic winter also offer a good chance to see the Northern Lights. We often stay at anchor at night or go ashore in search of a beautiful spot to admire and photograph the Aurora Borealis.
After a day in the cold, it is wonderful to return aboard the warm expedition ship. We can warm up in the sauna or watch the starry sky above the fjords together. And for those who dare, there is – depending on the conditions – also the possibility for a real Polar Plunge: a short but unforgettable jump into the ice-cold polar water.
Day 8 | End of the trip
Oct. 28, 2027 | Return home
The journey ends where it began, in Tromsø. After breakfast on the last day, we say goodbye to the crew and are taken back to the airport.
Highlights of this trip
What can you expect from Tromsø?
Snorkeling with orcas
In the fjords of northern Norway, large schools of herring gather in the fall. Orcas and humpback whales follow this food source and sometimes hunt here in large numbers. In only a few places in the world is it possible to observe these animals snorkeling. From the zodiac, we enter the water when conditions are right. In the clear, cold water you can see how the orcas and whales cooperate during the hunt.
Seeing the northern lights
The dark Arctic nights offer a great opportunity to see the northern lights. When conditions are right, green and sometimes purple veils of light appear over the fjords. From the ship we have a clear view of the horizon, but we can also go ashore to view the phenomenon from a quiet spot. Far away from artificial light, the colors and movements of the Aurora Borealis are often particularly visible.
Workshops by Thomas
During this trip, underwater photographer and ecologist Thomas Van Puymbroeck will join us. With more than 20 years of experience and publications in National Geographic, among others, he shares his knowledge about photography and marine animal behavior. He gives workshops and practical tips to properly capture orcas, humpback whales and herring in the fjords. At the same time, he will talk more about the behavior of these animals and their role in the ecosystem. Boat guides will also share their knowledge about the animals and their behavior.

Frequently asked questions about snorkeling with orcas
Group trip
The maximum group size is 12, including group leader Thomas.
You can certainly participate on your own! Most participants of our group tours come solo. This also makes it so much fun, you get to know people immediately and have buddies right away. You can join the group trip as a couple (or more).
Yes, we create a group app in advance so participants can get to know each other and receive practical info. On a previous group trip with Thomas, we also organized an evening so that the group could already meet each other. With enough enthusiasm we will do that again for this trip. In addition, both EWDR and Thomas themselves are present at several dive fairs, which also attract many travelers. We will be at the DiveExpo in Antwerp in December and at the Duikvaker in Houten in January.
Basically, you share the cabin with someone of the same sex. There are also some single cabins available. These have a surcharge compared to the double cabins and this makes the trip cost €6,200. If you want a single cabin, let us know in time. There are only 6 available in total and these are often quickly filled.
Yes, Thomas is group leader for this trip. He is not the guide during snorkeling, which is supervised by Virgo’s crew.
During this trip, accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis. So there are extra costs for lunch, dinner and drinks. There are also extra costs if you want to rent diving equipment or do an extra excursion. Everything that is included during this trip is indicated under the heading ‘included’.
General information
We advise all our clients to purchase travel insurance for this trip that covers evacuation and repatriation among other things (up to USD 500,000)
The most important thing is that you hold a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the end of your trip.
During the snorkeling trip in Norway, you stay relatively close to shore and there is no doctor on board. However, the advice is to make sure you have enough prescription medication – even in the event of a delay.
If you are on a boat, there is always a chance that you will get seasick. However, the water is relatively calm and sheltered among Norway’s fjords.
The new general European drone regulations came into force on Jan. 1, 2021. In Norway, you may fly in the “open category” without having to apply for a permit. However, you must meet several conditions and rules. For more information on flying your drone in Norway, please visit https://luftfartstilsynet.no/en/drones/
Snorkeling with orcas
To participate in polar snorkeling, such as snorkeling with orcas, some snorkeling experience is recommended, but diving experience is not necessary. This activity is both fun and fascinating and accessible to anyone interested in the underwater world of the polar regions. You can see large marine animals such as whales, orcas, seals and penguins, as well as smaller creatures such as anemones and starfish.
Snorkeling in the polar regions offers a unique experience – from floating in the cold waters of Antarctica and seeing penguins shooting through the water, to swimming in the deep fjords of Norway with orcas and humpback whales just meters away.
Polar snorkeling is open to guests 16 and older, provided a dry suit is available in their size. Dry suits on board start from size small (EU women’s size 36), but you are also allowed to bring your own dry suit.
No need for this.
The water is pretty cold! Between 1 & 6 degrees…. but fortunately there is comfortable clothing to keep you warm!
What should you bring and what is on board?
- Warm clothing: thermal undergarments, fleece or wool sweaters and pants.
- Waterproof outerwear: a good quality waterproof and windproof jacket and pants.
- Headgear and gloves: waterproof gloves and warm hat or balaclava.
- Footwear: waterproof boots and comfortable shoes for boarding.
- Personal items: sunglasses, sunscreen, personal medication.
- Backpack or waterproof bag for excursions.
- Camera and extra batteries: for capturing unique moments.
- Swimwear: for use of the sauna or hot tub on board.
During the snorkeling expeditions, you can use high-quality pool snorkeling equipment from Waterproof International in Sweden. These items are specially designed for snorkeling in cold water.
The Waterproof Polar Snorkeling package includes:
Waterproof D9X Snorkel Drysuit: These snorkel drysuits are made of a breathable ultralight fabric with a front zipper and latex seals for the neck and wrists.
Waterproof High Visibility Hood: The High Visibility Hoods feature a bright orange surface with reflective patches for optimal visibility and detection in rough seas and low light conditions. They also offer double protection in critical heat loss areas and sliding skin seals for the neck and face.
Waterproof 7mm G1 Mittens: These 3-finger semi-dry gloves have taped seams, sliding skin interior for easy on and off and a quick-drying surface. The gloves are part of Waterproof’s “Polar Evoluted” series. These items have been tested in polar regions.
Waterproof B5 Marine Boots: Neoprene boots are a sturdy, rubber-reinforced soft boot with adjustable straps and a special “fin strap stopper” to prevent your fins from sliding off.
Fins, Snorkel and Mask: On board they offer snorkels, masks and fins, but we recommend bringing your own gear if you already have it.
Optional! Thermal overall underwear € 80 per person per trip (indicate during booking)
Be sure to bring plenty of warm clothing to wear under your dry suit, or rent the optional undergarments. The overalls are specially designed to be worn under your dry suit and to keep you warm while snorkeling in cold water. They can also be worn as a windproof outer layer, such as when you are out on deck or on a shore excursion. They are very comfortable and easy to put on. Renting the overalls also minimizes your packing weight because you don’t have to bring extra layers of undergarments and warm clothing yourself.
