Luxury stay on Roatán at Barefoot Cay Boutique Resort
Roatán is one of the most famous diving destinations in the Caribbean and is known for its clear waters, colorful reefs and relaxed island atmosphere. Off the coast is Barefoot Cay, a small private island accessible only by a short crossing. As soon as you arrive, you immediately notice how quiet and secluded this place is. The resort is surrounded by protected seagrass, an essential part of the ecosystem that is often seen as the lungs of the sea and contributes to the rich biodiversity in the area. In addition, the resort has its own marina, where exclusive yachts can dock.
On the island itself you will find a small-scale and comfortable resort with seaside villas and spacious lofts overlooking the sea. Facilities such as the pool, spa and waterfront restaurant ensure a relaxing stay, where everything is about tranquility, nature and personal service.
On this trip you will make varied dives along reef walls, slopes and sheltered reefs. Underwater you will encounter a wide variety of life, from turtles and rays to reef sharks, while the reef is rich in sponges, hard and soft corals and numerous smaller reef dwellers.
Best travel time for a diving vacation to Roatán
March to August are the ideal months to visit Roatan because of the favorable weather and excellent diving conditions. During the American vacations (spring break- early March & Christmas) the resort can be very busy.

Day 1 & 2 | The journey to Roatán, Honduras
Today your trip starts with a flight to Miami. Depending on your departure point and whether you take a direct or indirect flight, you will be between 10 and 13 hours on the way to Miami. Often you will arrive in the afternoon after which you will have a hotel close to the airport to recover from the first part of your trip.
The next day enjoy breakfast at leisure at the hotel and fly from Miami to Roatán in about 2.5 hours, often in the early afternoon.
Once you arrive at Roatán, you will be met by someone from the Barefoot Cay Resort, who will take you to the resort in about 10 minutes.

Day 3 to 11 | Diving the most beautiful places of Roatán
Over the next few days you can make up to three dives per day. By default you have 2 boat dives in your dive package, in addition you can make shore dives from the Ocean Pavilion. This is a great spot for macro spotting. The package also includes one night dive. Want to dive more? You can also make a third boat dive per day and more frequent night dives. The program can be filled in as you like!
Around Barefoot Cay are more than 30 dive sites, all between 5 to 20 minutes’ boat ride away. One of the best known dive sites, and the dive site closest to the resort, is Mary’s Place. It is a spectacular dive site where narrow gorges and overhangs of volcanic origin run through the reef. Here you descend along walls and swim through natural passages, with beautiful light play and many sheltered spots for marine life.
Most dives are reef and wall dives. The reefs often start already shallow and gradually descend to greater depths. This makes the dives suitable for different experience levels and you can choose how deep to go. Conditions are generally calm, with little current and good visibility.
Underwater there is a lot of variety. On the reefs you will see large sponges, soft and hard corals and schools of reef fish. With any luck, you will encounter turtles, rays and reef sharks. Macro life is also present, including shrimp, nudibranchs and small reef fish hiding among the coral.
There are also two wrecks to explore. The El Aguila is a 70-meter cargo ship that was sunk in 1997. Or explore the Odyssey, a 90-meter ship sunk in 2002 that is said to require several dives to fully explore. Both wrecks are just a short boat ride from the resort.
Day 12 | Exploring the island above water
Besides diving, there is plenty to do on and around Barefoot Cay to add variety to your stay. At the resort itself, you can relax by the pool or at one of the quiet seaside lounge areas. The palapas and hammocks offer a nice place to enjoy the Caribbean surroundings and the view over the water.
For those who want to be a little more active, kayaks are available to leisurely explore the coastline and lagoon. You can also snorkel in the immediate area, should you find this a nice change from diving.
In addition, you can organize various excursions on Roatán through the resort. Think of a trip through the jungle on a zipline, a horseback ride along the coast or an island tour where you can see more of the local nature and culture. You can also take a boat trip or visit nearby beaches and villages.
Those who prefer to explore the area at their own pace can take trips to livelier spots such as West End or West Bay, where you’ll find restaurants, stores and beaches.
Day 13 & 14 | The journey back home
After nine unforgettable days of diving in enchanting Roatán, your diving vacation comes to an end. The memories of special encounters with dolphins, sharks and the colorful underwater world will hopefully linger for a long time. At the beginning of the day, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the island, perhaps take a last walk or buy souvenirs – then you will be transferred to the Roatán airport. Often you then transfer in Miami for your direct connecting flight back to Europe.
Highlights of this trip
What can you expect from Roatán?
Seahorse spotting
The waters around Roatán are home to several species of seahorses that hide in shallow, sheltered areas such as reefs and seagrass beds. Because of their perfect camouflage, they are often hard to find and only stand out when you look really closely. With any luck, you’ll see them clinging to a piece of coral or plant, barely moving. The presence of seahorses says a lot about the health of the underwater environment.
Mary’s Place
Mary’s Place is one of Roatán’s most famous dive sites and is a short distance from Barefoot Cay. You dive here through narrow gorges and deep crevices created by volcanic activity. The light falls in from above, making for unusual sightlines during the dive. Between the walls you often find lobsters, moray eels and schools of fish, while the structure of the site itself makes the dive really special.
Dive sites with fantastic visibility
The south side of Roatán is sheltered, so conditions are often calm. This makes for stable visibility and little current, giving you real time to look around. You can easily hang still here at interesting patches of reef or look for small life without being carried away by the current. This makes the dives comfortable and suitable for taking it all in.
