Why some dive destinations are already full a year in advance
You’ve finally decided to book that one bucket list diving trip. Maybe you’ve been dreaming of manta rays in Raja Ampat, hammerheads in Galápagos or wreck diving in Truk Lagoon for years. But as soon as you start looking at availability, it turns out the trip is already full. Sometimes even more than a year in advance.
To many divers, that sounds strange. Why would you need to plan a liveaboard or dive trip so far ahead?
Yet for some destinations, this is quite normal. Especially popular liveaboards and remote dive sites fill up quickly due to a combination of limited capacity, short peak seasons and high international demand.
In this article, we explain why some diving destinations fill up so quickly and which ones you should ideally book well in advance.
Why some dive trips fill up so quickly
Limited capacity on liveaboards
Unlike large cruise ships, liveaboards often have only a small number of cabins. Many boats accommodate only 12 to 20 divers. Some luxury or specialized liveaboards have even less capacity.
On top of that, popular liveaboards often make only a limited number of sailings per year. Especially in remote destinations, itineraries are dependent on weather conditions, permits, seasons and supplies.
For example, if a boat offers only ten trips a year with room for sixteen divers, there are only 160 spots available in total.
Short peak seasons
Many famous diving destinations have a relatively short period of time when conditions are optimal. Think calm sea, good visibility, chance of specific animals and suitable currents.
As a result, almost everyone wants to travel in the same months. Because these natural phenomena only happen temporarily, the most popular weeks are often the first to go.
Well-known examples are:
- whale shark season in Galápagos
- manta ray seasons in the Maldives
- hammerheads at Yonaguni in Japan
- orca season in Norway
- grouper spawning in Fakarava
- oceanic white tips in Egypt
High international demand
Some destinations are high on divers’ bucket lists worldwide. Especially experienced divers, underwater photographers and tech divers plan these types of trips years in advance.
In addition, popular liveaboards often have many returning guests. It is common for divers to book for the next season immediately after their trip ends.
Especially for known routes, this quickly creates scarcity.
Remote locations and tricky logistics
Many exclusive dive destinations are remote and difficult to reach. That means:
- restricted flights
- few accommodations
- small ports
- fewer liveaboards
As a result, the offer is automatically smaller than for more accessible destinations. With destinations such as Bikini Atoll, Truk Lagoon or French Polynesia, logistics play a big role. Some liveaboards only sail here for a few weeks or months a year.
Which destinations should you book well in advance?
Galapagos
Galápagos is one of the most sought-after liveaboard destinations in the world. Especially the famous dive sites Darwin and Wolf attract experienced divers from all over the world. For popular boats, the best departure dates are often fully booked more than a year in advance.

Raja Ampat
Raja Ampat is among the most biodiverse diving areas in the world and is high on the bucket list of many divers and underwater photographers.

Socorro
Socorro, officially part of the Revillagigedo archipelago, is known as the “Mexican Galápagos.” This destination is world famous for encounters with giant manta rays, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, dolphins and sometimes even humpback whales.
Why book so early?
- Socorro is only accessible by liveaboard
- there are relatively few boats operating in the region
- the season is limited (usually November through May)
- huge international demand for manta ray and shark expeditions
- popular boats have many repeat guests
Truk Lagoon
Truk Lagoon is a bucket list destination for wreck divers. The lagoon is home to dozens of World War II Japanese wrecks, ranging from cargo ships to planes and tanks.
Why book so early?
- limited number of liveaboards and resorts
- few international flights
- popular with tech divers and photographers
- many group tours are planned long in advance

Is early booking always necessary?
Not every diving trip needs to be booked extremely early. Destinations such as Egypt or parts of Thailand are also sometimes available last minute. Are you flexible with departure dates, itinerary, cabin type and/or season? Then there are often more options.
But for exclusive liveaboards, short peak seasons and remote destinations, the earlier you book, the greater the choice usually is.
