Diving trip to Fiji: the Soft Coral Capital of the World
A diver’s dream destination, Fiji is known worldwide for its exceptionally healthy reefs and enormous biodiversity. Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the islands offer a unique combination of colorful coral reefs, clear waters and a wide variety of marine life. Whether you enjoy macro photography or larger species, diving in Fiji is different every day.
There is a reason why Fiji is called the “Soft Coral Capital of the World.“ The reefs here are covered with soft corals in the most intense colors – from purple and pink to bright red and orange. Especially when the current increases, these corals open up completely, turning the reef into a living painting. Among all this color spectacle you will find a huge diversity of life, from tiny nudibranchs and reef fish to schools of fish and reef sharks on the more dynamic dive sites. There are more than 390 species of coral and about 1,200 species of fish, so there really is plenty to see and discover.
During this trip, you will stay at Volivoli Beach Resort, a comfortable resort on the north coast of Viti Levu. The resort is right by the sea and overlooks the Bligh Water, an area known for some of Fiji’s best dive sites. From the resort you can easily reach these dive sites by boat.
Besides diving, Volivoli is also a fine place to relax. The quiet location, the pool, the restaurant and the personal atmosphere ensure that you will completely unwind here.
Best travel time for a diving vacation to Fiji
Fiji offers year-round diving opportunities, with seasonal highlights due to natural ocean cycles. Summer offers warm water up to 28°C, ideal for spotting small marine animals and spawning corals, but less clear visibility due to plankton and algae growth. Winter with water around 23°C, offers clear visibility up to 50 meters and the opportunity to observe large fish and schools, preparing for reproduction.
Average temperatures
Wetsuit advice for Fiji
Between November & May, a 3mm is usually sufficient. After that it cools off slightly and some divers will prefer to dive in a 5mm anyway.

Day 1 & 2 | The trip to Fiji
Today your trip to Fiji starts! The most comfortable route is usually via Los Angeles or San Francisco, to which you will fly in about 10-12 hours. Since the connecting flight to Nadi often leaves around midnight, we will arrange a day hotel for you here. This will allow you to rest, refresh and relax before continuing your journey.
Would you like to make a stopover in Los Angeles or San Francisco along the way and explore the city for a few days? We can organize this for you as well.
After the approximately 10-hour flight to Fiji, you will arrive at Nadi Airport. Upon arrival, you will be picked up and driven to the Volivoli Beach Resort. Volivoli Beach Resort is a well-known dive resort on the north coast of Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji. It is about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Nadi Airport and is known as a peaceful location.
After arriving at the resort, you can unpack your diving suitcase, meet the instructors and relax for the rest of the day.
Day 3 to 15 | Diving in the Soft Coral Capital
The next 12 days are all about diving. There are more than 90 dive sites around the resort, giving you something new to discover every day.
On 10 days you will make boat dives. These take place in the morning, during which you will make two dives daily. You will dive in the beautiful Bligh Water. This area is known worldwide as the “soft coral capital of the world,” and for good reason. You will find a huge variety of soft corals in all colors, strong currents that provide nutrient-rich water and therefore an exceptionally rich marine life. Think colorful reef fish, schools of fish and healthy, vibrant reefs – this is top-level diving. There are more than 390 different types of coral in Fiji and more than 2,300 different species of fish.
In addition to the boat dives, you have unlimited access to three different house reefs. These house reefs are among the absolute best and are special because of their biodiversity and excellent macro life. The unique thing is that you can dive here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at no extra cost. This means that you can completely determine your own diving rhythm: an extra dive after the boat dives, an early morning dive or even a night dive from the shore.
So on the 2 days when no boat dives are scheduled, you can take full advantage of these house reefs. Prefer a day of something different? Then there is also plenty to do above water and you can choose to take a smaller dive package. Everything is flexible, depending on your wishes.
Day 16 | Explore Fiji above water
On this last day, you won’t be able to dive since you’ll be back on the plane tomorrow. So this gives you a chance to explore Fiji above water as well! There are plenty of activities to do and everything can be arranged from the resort. The list of activities is almost endless.
For example, you can visit a local market or village to learn about Fijian culture, or participate in a cooking class where you will learn to work with local ingredients. Various active excursions are also available, such as a hike to a waterfall, a snorkeling safari or an island tour.
For those who want to take it slower, there are plenty of relaxation options such as a spa treatment, a sunset cruise or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach with a book or cocktail. Unique activities such as coconut working, traditional handicrafts or even a visit to the Tomb of Ratu Udre Udre are also available.
Day 17 & 18 | Return trip
Today is the last day. In the morning you will check out and be driven to the airport.
From here you can start your return journey, but it is also well worth extending your trip. On the south side of the island is the Beqa Laqoon resort, a place where there are especially many sharks. You dive here at Cathedral Shark Dive, among other places. This place is known worldwide as the best shark dive site, where you can encounter at least nine different species of sharks, including the bull shark, nurse shark, silver shark and tiger shark. It is a fantastic combination with Volivoli!
The island Tonga is also relatively close by. Here you have the unique opportunity to snorkel with humpback whales, between July and October. Or opt for an extension in Australia, for example to explore the Great Barrier Reef or spend a few days exploring a city like Sydney.
Whatever choice you make: we will be happy to help you put together the perfect continuation of your trip.
