The hidden paradise: diving in Triton Bay and Raja Ampat

Step aboard the Adelaar Liveaboard and discover two of Indonesia’s most legendary diving areas: the southern part of Raja Ampat, Misool, and remote Triton Bay. This exclusive itinerary, sailed only once a year, takes you to regions few divers ever visit. Away from mass tourism and crowded routes, you’ll experience the feeling of true discovery here, with new reefs, lagoons and islands barely visited every day.

Known as the crown jewel of Raja Ampat, Misool is among the most species-rich marine areas in the world. Here you will dive past exuberant coral gardens, steep walls and seamounts full of life, where manta rays, reef sharks and huge schools of fish congregate. The area’s protected status has resulted in exceptionally healthy reefs and impressive biodiversity, which has given Raja Ampat its worldwide reputation.

Further south awaits Triton Bay, a hidden gem in the heart of the Coral Triangle. Here, the combination of nutrient-rich currents and minimal human influence has created an underwater world with spectacular soft corals, rare critters and pelagic encounters. Above water, hidden lagoons and the iconic Momon waterfall complete the picture.

What makes this trip extra special is the way you experience it all. Aboard the classic schooner Adelaar, you sail in comfort along remote islands and pristine coastlines, with personalized service and a relaxed atmosphere. The carefully crafted program revolves around quality, tranquility and experience, so that each dive and each location is fully appreciated.

This itinerary is called a hidden paradise for a reason. Not because Raja Ampat is unknown, but because this combination with Triton Bay, at this time and in this form, remains inaccessible to most divers. Only once a year is this unique route sailed, with a limited number of places on board. That makes this liveaboard exclusive not only in comfort and service, but also in destination, timing and experience.

Best travel time for a diving vacation to Triton Bay & Misool

The ideal time for this unique route between Misool and Triton Bay is in November. In Raja Ampat in this month the transitional season begins: calm sea, good visibility and pleasant water temperatures. Especially in Misool, this means optimal conditions for both large and small marine life, with active manta rays and vibrant reefs.

In Triton Bay, November coincides with a period of increased plankton production. This attracts large quantities of fish and increases the likelihood of encounters with whale sharks and other pelagic species.

The departure dates

Day 1 & 2 | The journey to Indonesia

The liveaboard starts from Kaimana, located on the southwest side of the island of New Guinea.

From Europe, you will probably fly to Jakarta first, before continuing on to Kaimana. This stopover may take several hours, depending on the airline and route chosen. We recommend arriving one day before the liveaboard leaves, so that in case of a delay you do not miss the boat. Of course we will arrange from EWDR in consultation a comfortable hotel for one night in either Jakarta or Kaimana. This depends on the flight times and connections.

Today you will arrive in Kaimana after your last flight from Jakarta.

Upon arrival, you will be picked up from the airport or your hotel and taken to the port. As soon as you step on board, you will quietly get acquainted with the ship, the crew and your fellow travelers. As the ship sets sail towards the first anchorage, you will enjoy impressive views. If the weather cooperates, dinner will be served outside, a perfect start to this special expedition off the beaten track.

The diving trip starts along the rugged coast of Aiduma, an island complex in the Aru Sea. It is a beautiful landscape full of small bays, rock islands and spectacular underwater formations. You will make three dives and one night dive in this area. Underwater you will see an environment full of densely vegetated soft corals where schools of snappers, sweetlips and fusiliers surround you. Napoleons and large groupers also show up here regularly. Perhaps the highlight is the wobbegong shark! This shark lives on the bottom and has excellent camouflage, so you have to do your best to spot it. If you are lucky enough to see one swimming, then you will really see what a special shark it is.

Today you reach the southernmost point of the trip: Dramai. Marine life is so abundant here that it sometimes feels like rush hour underwater. On three day dives and one night dive, you’ll swim through clouds of snappers, batfish, jacks and surgeonfish. Overhangs, swim-throughs and coral formations make each dive different. With any luck, a manta ray will even float by.

Diving today in Iris Strait, the passage between mainland West Papua and Aiduma Island, the constant current creates an explosion of life. The current carries nutrients and feeds the huge corals, black coral forests and the most colorful soft corals. Along these steep reef slopes and channels you will find dense schools of fusiliers, snapper and surgeonfish, as well as spectacular pelagic passage. The current brings in plankton and small fish, attracting graceful mobula rays that float elegantly through the blue.

During these dives you will make three day dives and often a night dive in locations where the variation between macro life and wide-angle action moments is great. The combination of soft and black corals, large schools of fish, unique reefs and current-driven dynamics makes Iris Strait one of the most vibrant and photogenic dive sites in this part of Indonesia.

Triton Bay is known for its exceptional biodiversity and spectacular diving opportunities. During three day dives and one night dive, you will discover islands that act as true magnets for fish, with a mix of colorful hard and soft corals. Underwater you will search for pygmy seahorses, tiger and leopard shrimp, local flash-lipped fish found nowhere else in the world, and other rare marine animals. In the evening, you will search for Triton Bay’s unique walking shark. Also known as the epaulette shark, this shark is found in only a few areas of the world.

Above water, explore a maze of lagoons and karst cliffs by speedboat, making this destination an unforgettable highlight.

At Namatote, a special location in Triton Bay, spend time around new moon at traditional fishing platforms. Sometimes these are visited by whale sharks, lovingly called “mothers of fish” by local fishermen. At other moon times, you focus on the south side of the island, with pinnacles, caves and black coral forests. During three day dives, you’ll also discover prehistoric petroglyphs, visible from the sea. After today, you leave Triton Bay behind and sail north.

The Momon region is a highlight for lovers of nature and underwater photography. Above water, the Kiti Kiti waterfall, which plunges from the rainforest into the sea, provides a spectacular backdrop. Underwater, you dive past seamounts and reefs where large schools of big eye trevallies, sharks and graceful manta ra ys glide through the blue. Between dives you can take a short jungle tour or explore the surrounding rainforest. Today you will make three dives, with plenty of opportunities for wide-angle photos and encounters with pelagic life.

Off the coast of Fakfak, you’ll stop at the Pisang Archipelago. During three day dives you will explore ledges, walls and sea mounts where batfish, reef sharks, leopard sharks and eagle rays congregate. After the final afternoon dive, the sails are set and you sail in style toward Raja Ampat.

Today the boat arrives in Misool, southern Raja Ampat, where one of Indonesia’s most pristine and spectacular diving areas awaits. Known for its mini-archipelagos, dramatic limestone formations and unprecedented biodiversity, Misool is the perfect starting point for diving in this region. The healthy corals, colorful reefs and countless fish species make this area a paradise for both wide-angle and macro photographers.

Three day dives and one night dive are planned at Wayilbatan, a collection of small islands and reefs in southern Misool. You’ll explore spectacular sea mounts, limestone formations and pristine coral gardens, where large schools of reef fish, sharks and graceful mobula rays glide through the blue. Macro lovers will find countless rare critters hidden among the corals. Wayilbatan offers an impressive introduction to the biodiversity of Misool and immediately shows why this part of Raja Ampat is so special.

Around Daram, a small island and dive area in southern Misool, you dive among impressive limestone formations rising from the sea and teeming with life. During three day dives you will be surrounded by barracudas, Spanish mackerel, trevallies and schools of batfish. The vast fan corals provide the perfect refuge for the unique “Santa Claus” pygmy seahorses, a species found only in Raja Ampat that gets its name from the red and white color pattern resembling Santa’s costume. The combination of dramatic rock formations, colorful corals and rare critters makes Daram one of the most photogenic dive sites in the region.

Batanta, located in the central part of Raja Ampat, is known for its enormous variety underwater and above. During two day dives you will explore macro-rich reefs full of rare critters, look for mandarin fish in their hiding places and make drift dives along vast walls towards the manta points. Here graceful mobula or manta rays often swim by, always impressive.

Above water, Batanta offers just as much adventure: hike through the lush rainforest to hidden waterfalls and listen to the cries of colorful birds of paradise and impressive hornbills.

After breakfast you will say goodbye to the Adelaar and step ashore in Sorong, the main port city of West Papua. Here ends this unforgettable expedition, which probably went by far too quickly. For the return trip, you usually fly via Jakarta or Bali, depending on your international connection.

Would you rather enjoy Raja Ampat even longer? Considering you’re already in one of the world’s most spectacular diving destinations, it’s a great opportunity to spend a few more days in a resort or lodge. This way you can make additional dives, relax in the tropical environment and further explore the biodiversity of the region. We are happy to think with you when planning this extension.

Highlights of this trip

What can you expect from this liveaboard in Triton Bay & Misool?

The stay on the liveaboard

Staying aboard the Adelaar is a highlight in itself. This is one of the most exclusive liveaboards around, due to its small scale with a maximum of eight guests and the personal atmosphere on board. The interior is built with attention to detail, with teak, high ceilings and stylish finishes that feel both elegant and spacious. Combined with the experienced crew, their dedication and excellent service, the Adelaar offers an unparalleled luxury experience at sea.

Misool, Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is known as the most species-rich marine area in the world, and especially the southern part, Misool, is among the absolute best. Here you will find vast coral gardens, steep walls, lagoons and seamounts full of life. Protection of the area has resulted in exceptionally healthy reefs and great fish stocks. Diving in Misool means overwhelming biodiversity, crystal clear waters and the feeling that you are exploring one of the last untouched places on earth.

Triton Bay

Triton Bay is so special because three unique elements come together here: extreme biodiversity, pristine reefs and minimal crowding. The combination of nutrient-rich currents and sheltered bays creates exceptionally healthy corals and a huge variety of marine life, from pygmy seahorses to mantas and walking sharks. Because the area is remote, you often dive here completely alone. This gives each dive a pure, intense and almost expedition-like character that you rarely experience anywhere else in the world.

Adelaar

The liveaboard and onboard facilities

You will sail aboard a beautiful 127-foot-long Dutch schooner: the Adelaar. The interior is finished in teak and has remarkably high ceilings, a rarity on a liveaboard and immediately felt in the spacious, luxurious atmosphere on board.

The crew consists of ten experienced Indonesian sailors, supplemented by a Western Cruise Manager / PADI instructor and a Divemaster. All crew members are fully certified, professionally trained and have a great passion for the sea, Indonesia and liveaboard diving. Some have been working on the Adelaar for over 25 years.

On board, you’ll enjoy a delicious mix of Indonesian and Western dishes specially tailored to life at sea. All meals are freshly prepared with carefully selected ingredients from local markets and regular suppliers.

Chefs Wayan and Made, trained by a top Belgian chef and with years of experience on board, provide surprising and tasty dishes every day. You dine in the comfortable salon or, weather permitting, under the stars on deck.

On board are only four comfortable cabins, which means a maximum of eight guests will sail along. This creates a personal, quiet and exclusive atmosphere.

The Master Suite is a real eye-catcher: spacious, stylish and one of a kind. In addition, there are three staterooms. Stateroom 2 and 3 are identical, while Stateroom 4 has a slightly different layout.

All cabins have individually controlled air conditioning and a modern entertainment system. They are equipped with private bathrooms with high-quality Kohler sink, Grohe faucets, hot shower and JETS vacuum toilet.

For extra comfort, care products from Sensatia Botanicals are on hand: an Indonesian brand with natural shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
