Diving in Fiji: the Soft Coral Capital of the World
As one of the world’s premier dive sites, the Fiji Islands offer a combination of luxury, tranquility and a fantastic underwater world.
Fiji is very versatile as a diving destination. The amount of soft corals and quantity of sharks make this undeniably a world-class diving destination. Indeed, the powerful currents of the outer reefs bring nutrient-rich water from afar, which in turn attracts an incredible diversity of marine life, ranging from the smallest macro-life to amazing pelagic phenomena.
With an incredible diversity of more than 390 coral species and about 1,200 fish species, Fiji is a true paradise and there is something for every discerning diver. Wall dives, swim-throughs, caves, canyons and special encounters with animals such as bull sharks, wahoo and the occasional manta ray or whale shark make diving in Fiji an experience you won’t soon forget.
The Beqa Lagoon Resort in Fiji has been a household name for many years. The resort is very child-friendly (with babysitting service) as well as very romantic. The resort facilitates wedding ceremonies and offers special options for couples who are honeymooning or just want to spend some romantic time together. Think about private dinner experience by candlelight, various couples massage options or exploring the secret island together barefoot – including private beach. A visit to the Beqa Lagoon Resort in the Fiji Islands is definitely perfect for the diver with a romantic goal.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel at home among the tropical flowers, warm waters and extraordinary resort. World-class diving, delicious cuisine, relaxing spa treatments and incomparable Fijian hospitality are there for you to fully enjoy your stay.
Best travel time for a diving vacation to Fiji
Fiji offers year-round diving opportunities, with seasonal highlights due to natural ocean cycles. Summer offers warm water up to 28°C, ideal for spotting small marine animals and spawning corals, but less clear visibility due to plankton and algae growth. Winter with water around 23°C, offers clear visibility up to 50 meters and the opportunity to observe large fish and schools, preparing for reproduction.
Average temperatures
Wetsuit advice for Fiji
Between November & May, a 3mm is usually sufficient. After that it cools off slightly and some divers will prefer to dive in a 5mm anyway.

Day 1 & 2 | The trip to Fiji
Today your trip begins and you will likely fly to Los Angeles or San Francisco in about 10-12 hours. Here we will arrange a (day) hotel for you, as your next flight leaves for Nadi (Fiji) just before midnight. Would you like to spend some time in Los Angeles or San Francisco? Then, of course, we can also plan this as a stopover.
After a 10-hour flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco you will arrive at Nadi Airport. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be picked up by car and have another 2.5-hour overland ride ahead to the port from which the boat leaves for the resort. After that, it’s another 45 minutes by boat.
Upon arrival at the resort, check in and have the rest of the day to relax and recover from the long journey.
Day 3 to 15 | Diving in Fiji
Upon arrival at the resort you will be accompanied by a divemaster for a check dive, during the check dive you will check all your equipment and the divemaster will explain exactly how everything works at the dive shop.
Unlimited house reef diving is included in all dive packages and boat dives are organized both early morning and afternoon. The weather and the dive sites already visited by the attending divers are determining factors in choosing the dive site on a given day.
In the dive center you will find a large white board showing the boat schedule for the day. With more than 30 reef dive sites to explore, there is always something new to discover! Each location is unique and has something special to offer.
During your trip, you’ll have the chance to explore some of the most impressive dive sites in the world. A highlight is undoubtedly the Cathedral Shark Dive, located at a depth of about 20 meters. This place is known worldwide as the best shark diving site, where you can encounter at least nine different species of sharks, including the bull shark, tiger shark, nurse shark, gray shark and black tip shark. This unique experience is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Diving with nitrox is highly recommended to fully enjoy the experience. This dive is not included by default in the dive package.
In addition, you can enjoy many more beautiful dive sites such as:
- Fantasea, located at a depth of about 21 meters, is an explosion of color. This spot is dotted with soft coral and countless Gorgenian Fans of all shapes, sizes and colors.
- John’s Tunnel, an impressive dive site at a depth of 24 meters, with a 9-meter long tunnel, 1.5 to 2.5 meters wide, filled with soft coral and a wreck at the same depth.
- Soft Coral Plateau, at a depth of about 27 meters, this plateau is located in the middle of the northern passage to Beqa Lagoon and is home to eagle rays, Blue Ribbon eels and an abundance of soft coral.
- Seven Sisters, at a depth of 21 meters, consists of seven coral heads in a row, each with its own unique characteristics.
- Blue Wall, a wall rising from 45 to 5 meters on the southeast side of Beqa Lagoon, offers a view of sharks, manta rays and eagle rays, with visibility of at least 30 meters.
- Frigate Wall, a dive site that extends to a depth of more than 40 meters. Dotted with wall cracks and alleys, this spot is also home to the famous “Fiji Pipeline” surf spot.
Day 16 | Exploring Fiji overwater
Today, unfortunately, you cannot dive as you will be on a plane tomorrow. But dont worry, on land there are also various activities to experience at Beqa such as treks to remote waterfalls and mountain peaks of the island. Some tours may require some effort, but the views make it well worth it.
Some of the possible activities: Kayaking in the Mangroves, day trip tot Suva (capital of Fiji), White Water Raftig, Zip-lining.
Day 17 & 18 | Return home
In the morning you will check out at the resort and you will be taken back to the airport. Because the flights don’t leave until late in the evening, but you have checked out early, we can take a dayhotel organize for you before you fly back to Los Angeles or San Francisco and then on to home.
Would you rather get away for longer? You can also extend or combine your trip with a stay at the Volivoli Beach Resort, on the north coast of the same island. Here you will dive in Bligh Water, among other places, the area known as the Soft Coral Capital of the world. Also Tonga is relatively close by. Here you can snorkel with humpback whales between July and October, a very special experience.
Highlights of this trip
What can you expect from Fiji's underwater world?
World-famous shark dives
The Cathedral dive is world-famous for its sharks. Nine different species are seen here, including bull sharks, tiger sharks and whitetip reef sharks. During this dive you will descend to a fixed location where the sharks regularly gather, making for an impressive and controlled diving experience accompanied by experienced guides.
Soft Coral Capital of the World
Fiji’s underwater world is known worldwide for its incredible diversity of soft corals and colorful reefs; at Volivoli and the surrounding dive areas, you’ll see huge gardens of soft coral in purple, pink, red and orange, making each dive feel like a living work of art. These rich coral structures attract a huge variety of marine life, from small macro species to schools of reef fish, and make Fiji one of the most visually impressive dive destinations in the world.
Unlimited diving on the house reef
From the resort you can do unlimited diving on the house reef, right from shore. The reef offers a nice mix of hard and soft corals, sand flats and small structures. You may encounter turtles, reef fish, moray eels, nudibranchs and other macro species here. With any luck, you may also see rays or reef sharks.
