Scuba diving in Tofo, Mozambique
Escape to Mozambique’s pearl, Tofo, a hidden paradise for divers, surfers and nature lovers. During this vacation, you will stay right on the beach of Tofo at Liquid Divers.
Divers from all over the world come to Tofo because of its encounters with “great” marine life and yet it is one of the few diving destinations that still retains its natural beauty and authentic charm. During surface intervals at sea, you can encounter whale sharks in Tofo, for example, and take time to snorkel and swim with them. If you’re lucky, you might also see humpback whales jumping out of the water!
In Tofo you can do more than diving – here you have the chance to wave surf, kite surf or take a beautiful kayak trip through the mangroves. For those looking for some quieter adventure, they have they the Sundowners Cruise where you can enjoy breathtaking sunset views while sipping refreshing drinks and local snacks on a traditional dhow boat.
Best travel time: the best time to go to Tofo to come depends on what you want to do/see. The rainy season is from January to April, but Tofo has its own microclimate, so the diving conditions are usually fantastic. Visibility is best from December to June. After Easter to early July is quieter and the best time to dive. Avoid the vacation periods if you want to go to Mozambique. Humpback whales find you find here most between July and September.
Tofo’s biodiversity and varying conditions make diving here challenging. Daily changes in this microclimate are difficult to predict, which makes it exciting! We recommend a minimum of 50 dives, Advanced Open Water certification and physically good health so you can enjoy your diving here safely and to the fullest.

Day 1 - Flight to Johannesburg
Depending on the airport, you will fly to Johannesburg in about 8-10 hours. You often arrive late in the afternoon and evening, making it impossible to fly through in one go. We will make sure there is a hotel where you can unwind so you can catch the onward flight to Mozambique early the next morning.
Day 2 - Flight to Vilanculos
In about 1.5 hour after having a relaxed breakfast, you fly from Johannesburg on a direct flight to Vilanculos where you will be is picked up by someone from Liquid Divers. In about 3 to 4 hours you will then drive from Vilanculos Airport to Tofo. Belowwerg you already get a good impression of Mozambique. During the afternoon you will arrive in Tofo. Here check in at Liquid Divers and can get acquainted at the dive center to arrange everything before you go diving the next day!
Photo 2 shows the Liquid accommodation from the air, above the pool is the reception and some bungalows. Below the pool is the restaurant, terrace and a few more small bungalows.
Day 3 to 8 - Diving & Chilling in Tofo
There are not many places in the world where you can see big stuff. Fortunately, Tofo is one of them! Humpback whales, manta rays, whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, turtles, rays and dolphins. That’s going to be huge fun at Liquid Dive Adventures. This diversity in marine life is Tofo’s biggest attraction. This does mean that divers are greatly challenged during deep dives by currents and during shallow dives by waves.
The weather is changeable and difficult to predict, which makes each time challenging. Liquid Dive Adventures looks at how it is coming each morning and then makes the time schedule and where to dive that day. This requires some flexibility from the diver. Because of the challenging dives, they dive in small groups at Liquid Dive Adventures.
In the morning mayou a “double tank” dive, in which you two dives consecutively maakt with a surface interval on the boat. You will be provided with water, coconuts and peanuts on board so you have enough energy to make the next dive. There are about 15 dive sites in Tofo. Your divet in remote blue waters (sometimes with “negative entry” = This is diving off the boat directly down without returning to the surface). The duik cuttings range from 5-35 meters depth. Attention! Nitrox is not available at this location.
Day 9 - Excursions and Packing
Helano more diving for a while today, but reminiscing. Perhaps already a great time to plan your next diving vacation or pick up a souvenir at the local market.
In addition, today you can also sunbathe by the pool (overlooking the sea), go wave surfing, kite surfing or take a nice kayak trip through the mangroves.
So there is still plenty to do!
Day 10 & 11 - Home
After a successful diving vacation, return to the airport after breakfast. In the early afternoon you will fly back home on an overnight flight.
Extension: Rather not go home yet? Understand very well. In Mozambique we can organize several Safaris, including to the Kruger Park. It is also quite possible to combine diving in Mozambique with diving in South Africa. Feel free to ask us about the possibilities.
The accommodation
The stay and surroundings
Liquid Divers
Liquid Dive Adventures, based in picturesque Tofo since 2014, is the result of a Finnish family who fell in love with this place during their world trip. They saw humpback whales on the horizon and decided to establish the eco-friendly Liquid Dive Lodge and dive center here, which marked the birth of the Liquid Dive Family. This team also includes two other Finns who run Happi Restaurant, an establishment that serves international vegetarian dishes prepared with fresh local produce. After an impressive dive with Liquid Dive Adventures, enjoy their delicious feel-good food. The passionate Liquid Dive team is dedicated to ocean conservation and protection, which is why they have rightly been recognized as one of the PADI Green Star Dive Centers for their environmentally responsible practices.
Stay at Liquid Dive Lodge on the beach at Tofo. The Liquid Lodge has 11 beach front cabins with private terraces and -extremely- Scandinavian interiors. Even while taking a dip in the pool you have a view of the sea. Liquid Dive Lodge is located on an enclosed section of the beach, close to the center of Tofo with numerous bars and restaurants. The beach front cabins of Liquid Dive Lodge are equipped with a double bed (double / twin) with mosquito net, air conditioning (very nice during the hot days especially in January and February), wifi in the room, private terrace and bathroom with hot water shower.
