Where can you see manta rays in Indonesia?
Indonesia is one of the best places in the world to see manta rays. Both reef manta rays and oceanic manta rays can be found around various islands. These animals aren’t found randomly at specific dive sites. They’re attracted to nutrient-rich waters, currents, and so-called cleaning stations, where cleaner fish remove parasites and debris from their skin and gills.
For divers, there are three destinations in Indonesia that clearly stand out: Komodo, Raja Ampat, and Nusa Penida. All three offer the chance for impressive encounters with manta rays, but the underwater experience is quite different.
Seeing Manta Rays in Komodo
Komodo is a fantastic destination for manta rays and is often combined with spectacular reef dives, strong currents, and the unique landscape of Komodo National Park.
One of the well-known spots is Manta Point near Makassar Reef, where manta rays gather in the nutrient-rich waters. There are also well-known manta cleaning and feeding stations around Nusa Kode.
For those traveling to Komodo specifically to see the manta rays, we recommend a liveaboard. There are also resorts in Komodo where you can dive, but a liveaboard allows you to visit multiple areas and dive sites. This simply gives you more opportunities to find the right conditions and manta rays.
By the way, diving in Komodo isn’t always calm. Currents play a major role here, and some manta ray dives are true current dives. That makes Komodo particularly interesting for divers who are comfortable with currents and want to see large marine animals in a dynamic environment.
Seeing Manta Rays in Raja Ampat
Raja Ampat is also a fantastic destination for manta rays. In the Dampier Strait, there are several spots where reef manta rays gather, including Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge.
This is where reef hooks come in handy. In areas with strong currents, you can use a reef hook to safely position yourself at a distance from the reef. That way, you don’t have to swim against the current; instead, you can just hang back and watch what swims by.
Mantas may pass by the same spot several times while being cleaned or swimming through the nutrient-rich water.
Raja Ampat also offers much more than just manta rays. The region’s immense biodiversity makes it a destination where you can easily combine a manta ray encounter with colorful reefs, schools of fish, sharks, and a vast array of other marine life.
Seeing Manta Rays at Nusa Penida (Bali)
One of the most famous places to see manta rays is Nusa Penida, near Bali. Several dive shops offer day trips from Bali to dive at Manta Point in Nusa Penida. At Manta Point and other locations, manta rays come to cleaning stations, and you have the chance to see them year-round.
Still, Nusa Penida isn’t the ideal manta destination for everyone.
The most famous manta ray sites are visited by manydive schools, day trips, and snorkelers. As a result, it can get quite crowded, especially during the high season. In addition, Nusa Penida is located on the open ocean, and conditions here can change drastically. The sea can be rough, with swells and currents, which means a manta dive or snorkeling trip can feel quite different from what the photos online suggest.
That’s something to keep in mind when choosing Nusa Penida for manta rays. The big advantage is its accessibility: it’s relatively easy to get to Nusa Penida from Bali, and there are plenty of opportunities for diving or snorkeling. But if you’re primarily looking for a peaceful underwater manta experience, you’re better off considering places like Komodo or Raja Ampat.

Where else can you see manta rays in Indonesia?
The three destinations listed above are not the only places where manta rays can be found. Indonesia has a vast range, and manta rays are regularly spotted at various other locations.
There’s also a chance of seeing manta rays at destinations such as Alor, Flores, and parts of Bali and the surrounding islands. However, conditions and predictability vary greatly from location to location.
That’s why, when planning a trip, I wouldn’t just ask, “Where are the manta rays?” but would focus primarily on which destination best suits the experience you’re looking for.
For example, if you’re looking for a relatively easy-to-reach manta dive from Bali, Nusa Penida is a great option. If you want to combine manta diving with spectacular drift dives and a liveaboard, Komodo is a logical choice. And for those looking to take a longer diving trip where manta rays are just one part of an enormous diversity of marine life, Raja Ampat is the obvious choice.
Why do manta rays keep coming to the same spots?
Mantas are filter feeders. They swim through the water with their enormous mouths open, filtering plankton from the water. That’s why areas where currents bring together nutrient-rich water are particularly attractive to manta rays. This also explains why manta rays are often found near reefs, straits between islands, and other places where the current is stronger.
In addition, manta rays regularly visit cleaning stations. There, they hover calmly above a reef or rock while small cleaner fish remove parasites and dead skin. For divers, this is one of the best ways to observe manta rays: the animals stay in the same spot for a relatively long time and sometimes pass by several times.
This also explains why you have a much better chance of seeing manta rays at certain dive sites than at others. It’s not just about the presence of manta rays in a region, but mainly about the conditions that cause them to gather there specifically.
