Learn technical diving in Dahab with TDI

One of the best places in the world to become a certified technical diver is Dahab. This destination attracts both novice and experienced tech divers because of its perfect combination of clear waters, calm seas and impressive dive sites. Dahab offers conditions almost nowhere else as consistent and safe: shallow lagoons, imposing rock walls and deep dive spots, all in a relaxed dive culture.

You are staying at The Bridge Dahab gives you direct access to the most beautiful sites and a comfortable base from which to develop your skills. Here you can take your first steps in technical diving, or expand your existing skills.

Why choose technical diving? It goes beyond deeper and longer dives. You learn crucial skills such as planning dives independently, mastering perfect trim and buoyancy, applying team procedures and becoming familiar with advanced equipment. This knowledge will make you a much safer, more confident and skilled diver – whether you’re seeking that depth or just want to improve your technique.

During this trip you will follow the TDI course line, consisting of the Intro to Tech, and 3 levels: Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures. Each course builds on the previous one, so step by step you increase your technical knowledge, skills and confidence underwater. Do you have more time? Then you can also take the Extended Range course, the last course in the line.

Best time to travel for a diving trip to Dahab, Egypt

In the Dahab you can do excellent diving all year round in the Red Sea. Just keep in mind that it can be very hot in the summer, making training and longer dives sometimes less comfortable.

Therefore, the ideal period for technical training in Dahab is the low season, from December through April, when temperatures are more pleasant and water conditions are often optimal.

Wetsuit advice for Dahab, Egypt

During TDI courses, you often dive several dives a day and sometimes longer underwater. Therefore, it is important that you stay comfortable and warm. At least a 5mm wetsuit is fine, for extra warmth on longer dives. A 7mm wetsuit is also recommended. You can also bring your hood, so you don’t lose heat through your head. For maximum warmth and comfort during intense training days, you can also opt for a drysuit, so you can stay in the water longer without problems. So choose your wetsuit primarily based on comfort and the duration of your dives during the course.

Day 1 | The trip to Dahab

Today the trip starts with a flight to Sharm El Sheikh. After arriving at the airport, you can go straight through customs, as you do not need a visa for this part of Egypt. As soon as you collect your luggage and walk out, a driver will be waiting for you.

Upon arrival in Dahab, check in at the hotel and immediately visit the dive center, Liquid Adventures Dahab, to discuss dive plans and make preparations for the next few days.

The rest of the day you can relax, explore downtown Dahab and find a nice restaurant for dinner.

The schedule below is an example. Your final program and route will be agreed with your instructor, and will depend on your energy, progress etc.

Today you will start your courses and meet your instructor at Liquid Adventures. Below is an example of what a day can look like. The final format depends on your progress, energy and personal preferences, and you will coordinate with your instructor.

The day begins with a brief introduction of course objectives and safety procedures. You will be explained equipment, configurations and gas management, and introduced to basic skills needed by both recreational and technical divers, such as breathing, fin technique, body positioning and motion control.

You will then enter the water for your first training dive in the sheltered bay of Dahab. Here the focus is on mastering trim, buoyancy and balance, as well as practicing new skills such as gas shutdown procedures and optimally streamlining your equipment. After the dive, you will discuss your performance with the instructor, receive feedback and the exercises will be adjusted to your level and progress.

Intermediate sessions focus on dive planning, situational awareness and teamwork. You will learn how to optimally organize your dive before and during the session and how to operate effectively and safely underwater with a buddy. You will also have the opportunity to try out different technical dive configurations – from a single cylinder to a twinset – so you can discover what suits you best.

Through this combination of theory, practice and personal guidance, you will develop not only your technical skills, but also your confidence and control underwater. All Intro to Tech courses take place in the sheltered and safe bay of Dahab, providing an ideal environment in which to take your first steps in technical diving or refine your existing skills. This course lasts for 2 days.

After taking Intro to Tech, you will move on to the Advanced Nitrox course. In this course, you will learn to handle a wider range of gas mixtures, from EAN-21 to 100% oxygen, for dives up to a depth of 40 meters. The goal is to train you in the benefits, potential risks and proper procedures when using enriched gases, even for dives that do not require staged decompression. In consultation with your instructor, decompression techniques can also be combined with this course.

During the course you will practice practical applications such as gas management, equipment configuration and dive planning. You will learn how to safely and efficiently execute a dive on EANx mixes, while already engaging in a more technical mindset and being prepared for future deeper and longer dives.

This is followed by the TDI Decompression Procedures Diver course. Here you will delve deeper into the theory, methods and procedures of planned staged decompression diving. This course can be taken on its own or combined with courses such as Advanced Nitrox, Advanced Wreck or Extended Range.

The goal is to teach you how to plan and execute a standard staged decompression dive, to a maximum depth of 45 meters, unless combined with Extended Range. You will learn the most commonly used equipment, setups and decompression techniques, and you may use EANx or oxygen for decompression, within the limits of your current certification.

The combined Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures course normally lasts six days, with maximum dive depths up to 45 meters, and provides a perfect transition to the more challenging Extended Range course.

After completing Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures, you can advance to the Extended Range Diver course. This course is designed to teach you to dive safely and competently on air to a maximum depth of 55 meters, including staged decompression using nitrox mixtures or oxygen.

During the course the focus is on:

  • Proper techniques for deep air diving
  • Specific equipment requirements and configurations for Extended Range
  • Safety and risks in deep diving and decompression
  • Practical use of nitrox or oxygen for staged decompression

The course normally lasts four days, where theory, practical skills and diving experience go hand in hand. You will learn step by step to deal with the challenges of deeper diving and receive full guidance from the experienced instructors of Liquid Adventures Dahab.

After completing Extended Range, you are ready for the maximum depth of sky diving within this TDI track and have a solid foundation for further technical diving adventures.

On day 14, it’s time to enjoy everything else Dahab has to offer, because the next day you will leave for home again. After intensive dive training, this is a perfect opportunity to relax and explore the surroundings.

After a final breakfast and check-out at The Bridge Dahab the next day, it is time to head to the airport. Depending on your flight, you will be transferred to Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport, from where you will fly back home.

Take one last look at the Red Sea and the desert surroundings of Dahab along the way. With a head full of new experiences, improved diving skills and great memories you will return, ready to further use your technical knowledge in future dives.

Frequently asked questions about this diving holiday

Learning to dive technically

In principle, you can take the courses one after the other. You start the next one when the previous course is completed. It does depend on the student’s performance and ability to meet the required standards. In technical diving, certificates must be obtained by demonstrating that one has the required competencies. If a student progresses well and maintains the required level, you can continue to combine courses. Otherwise, the instructor may recommend pausing at a certain level to gain additional experience through recreational fun diving and further practice to strengthen a solid foundation before continuing.

You can, Liquid Adventures offers the technical dives with both TDI and PADI.

You will then take the following courses:

  • PADI Discover Tec diving
  • PADI Tec 40
  • PADI Tec 45
  • PADI Tec 50

Each training provider has its own name for the courses, but by and large you learn the same thing.

  • TDI Advanced Nitrox is equivalent to PADI Tec 40
  • TDI Decrompression Procedures equivalent to PADI Tec 45
  • TDI Extended Range equivalent to PADI Tec 50

With the last course, TDI Extended Range, you can reach depths of up to 55 meters, compared to 50 meters in PADI standards.

Technical Diving International (TDI) and Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) are both renowned diving organizations. The main difference is in their focus:

  • TDI focuses primarily on technical diving.
  • PADI focuses primarily on recreational diving.

TDI is the world’s largest training organization for technical diving. They specialize in advanced training such as Nitrox and trimix diving, decompression diving, sidemount, cave diving and rebreather diving. TDI is known for flexibility in lesson design and a strong focus on skills and procedures within technical diving.

PADI also offers technical courses, but is originally a recreational trainer. This does not mean that their courses are any less good. But for divers who want to specialize in technical diving, TDI offers a strong and specialized training path.

However, an excellent instructor at PADI is more valuable than a mediocre instructor at TDI – and vice versa. Good guidance, personal attention and experience make the real difference in your development as a diver. Of this we know it’s right at The Bridge and Liquid Adventures. Still unsure between PADI and TDI? Feel free to contact us for more answers.

A typical training day usually begins with theory in the classroom, followed by exercises on dry land to train procedures and refine skills. Then you go into the water for practical dives, where you immediately apply the techniques you just learned. After each dive, there is an extensive debriefing, where you receive feedback and discuss planning for the next training day with your instructor.

Certainly, you can take extra rest days and stay longer. You can even choose to also take the TDI Extended Range course, where you are eventually certified to 55 meters deep. This course takes 6 days to complete.

Of course, you can also choose to do just the intro to tech and the advanved nitrox for example.
