Wetsuit advice for diving in the Bahamas
The water temperature is between 24°C and 29°C. In the winter months (December to March), the water may feel a bit fresher, especially on deep or longer dives. In January, the temperature can drop to 22°C. A 5 mm full wetsuit is comfortable then. In summer, a shorty or 3 mm wetsuit is usually sufficient.

Day 1 + 2 | Trip to the Bahamas
Today you will travel to the Bahamas! To be exact, you will travel to Freeport, the largest city on the island of Grand Bahama. A trip here always has a transfer. Often you will travel via the US or via Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Total travel time is 13 to 17 hours.
Upon arrival at the airport in Freeport, you will be taken to the port. The drive is about 20 minutes. The crew is already waiting for you to help you set up your dive equipment and point out the cabin for the coming week. In the evening there is dinner on the boat.
The boat leaves at 6 p.m. and boarding begins from 4 p.m. When booking the flight, we of course take this into account as much as possible, but should the times not work out, it is nicer to spend a night in a hotel near the port. We also arrange this for you – with all necessary transfers.
Day 3 to 7 | Diving aboard the Aggressor II
Every day of this trip is dedicated to diving, of course. Over the next few days you will make up to 4 dives a day, all from the boat. There are many beautiful dive sites, but the absolute highlight (and the reason many people go to the Bahamas) are tiger sharks!
The boat sails the Grand Bahama West End & Tiger Beach route, a perfect of reef, wreck and shark dives. It’s an impressive variety from colorful reefs to shark-rich sand flats.
Some of the dive sites are:
- Mount Olympus & Mini Wall: 2 spectacular reef formations with steep walls and lots of macro life.
- Hog Fish & Fishtail: Shallow, coral-rich dive sites with a diversity of tropical fish.
- Shark Paradise & Tiger Beach: Iconic spots where you can see Caribbean reef sharks, lemon sharks and tiger sharks up close.
- Sugar Wreck: A shallow, historic wreck filled with moray eels, nurse sharks and turtles.
- El Dorado & El Capitan: Beautiful reefs where you will encounter a wide range of marine life during the day and at night.
There are no night dives during this itinerary, but there is plenty to do on the boat in the evening. After dinner there are fish identification presentations, movies, games and more.
Day 8 | Last day of diving & return to port
On the last morning, one more dive is scheduled, a relaxing conclusion to the diving week. Around noon, the Bahamas Aggressor II sails back to the port of Freeport.
For the farewell, there will be a fun Guest Appreciation Cocktail Party with the crew and fellow divers. Dinner on the last night is not included, but there are plenty of nice restaurants to choose from in Freeport. You simply sleep on board that night, docked in the harbor.
Day 9 + 10 | Farewell to the boat & home
After a final breakfast on board, it’s time to say goodbye. Your belongings are already packed and the transfer is ready to take you back to the airport. Usually this is around 8 in the morning.
Not ready to go home yet? Then you can also extend your trip with a roundtrip in the Bahamas and enjoy island life a little longer. From Freeport (Grand Bahama) you can easily travel on to other islands such as Nassau, Exuma or Eleuthera. Think pearly white beaches, azure bays, swimming pigs, uninhabited islets and laid-back island culture. Feel free to ask about the possibilities!
This trip can also be combined well with a trip to, say, Florida to visit Miami or the Everglades. We are happy to help with a customized plan.
And would you like to combine this trip with seeing hammerhead sharks? Then you must be on Bimini, another island of the Bahamas. It is possible to combine this in 1 trip. We are happy to help you with this as well!
Highlights of this trip
What can you expect from the underwater world in the Bahamas?
Diving with tiger sharks
Tiger Beach is one of the most famous shark diving spots in the world – and for good reason. In shallow, crystal-clear water, you dive here among large tiger sharks, lemon sharks and reef sharks. The conditions are perfect: a white sandy bottom, calm sea and excellent visibility of up to 30 meters. This dive is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those who want to come face to face with these impressive predators, safely accompanied by experienced guides.
Coral reefs and drop-offs
These reefs are colorful, vibrant and full of life. At Shark Paradise, chances are you will encounter large schools of fish, barracudas and eagle rays in addition to reef sharks. Mount Olympus, in turn, is famous for its impressive coral formations, soft gorgonians and excellent opportunities for underwater photography. Biodiversity is high and dives are relaxed, giving you quiet time to explore the reef in detail.
Encounters with other sharks
Not only Tiger Beach is full of action – in other places such as El Dorado, Fish Tail and Mini Wall you will dive among various shark species. Think curious Caribbean reef sharks, imposing lemon sharks and relaxed nurse sharks resting under rocks. Sometimes they circle around you by dozens. These encounters are impressive but calm and well-guided, allowing you to get very close to these fascinating animals in a safe and respectful way.

Frequently asked questions about the Bahamas
Diving general
This trip is specifically about seeing (tiger) sharks, so you really do shark dives. You enter the water with a negative entry, so you lower yourself directly to the bottom. During the shark dives you sit in a semi-circle on the sandy bottom. At the bow of the boat you hang a triangle with fish, this is what the sharks come for. So during these dives you sit mostly still on the bottom at about 10 meters.
There are also some reef dives, where you also have the chance to encounter sharks. There can also be quite a bit of current during the dives, since you are on the open sea. So it is good to definitely have some experience for this trip. All dives are made off the ship.
No, the sharks are not fed. However, ‘chumming’ is used, where the sharks are attracted by smell. A triangle with fish is hung from the bow of the boat, spreading the smell of the fish in the water. This attracts different species of sharks.
Although it is not officially in the program, it may be possible to do some night dives during this trip. The night dives will be made on the Sugar Wreck, a shallow wreck located 6 meters deep.
You can make up to 4 dives per day.
Yes, you can! The following courses are offered:
- Nitrox specialty (PADI and SSI).
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver
- SSI Adventure diver
Should more specialty’s be available, you will be told during the first briefing. The cost of the course must be paid on site.
Diving equipment
You can just use your normal gear, but we like to give you some tips.
- Sharks have poor vision, and are attracted to bright contrasts. Certainly the colors yellow and white can attract sharks’ attention with the reflection of the sun because it can look like fish. Where appropriate, try to dive with black fins, for example, and other black material. If you do have yellow or white, you can still use it. Lemon sharks in particular often come to take a look at these colors.
- During shark dives you sit on the bottom and it is nice to be as stable as possible, so as not to churn up sand and also because there may be dozens of (reef) sharks around you. Using a pointer that you put in the sand is a good tool to keep stable.
- The tiger shark season runs from April through July. In April, the water is about 24°C, which is quite chilly if you sit still on the bottom for an hour. It is nice to bring a hood and gloves.
- Are you cold easily? Then definitely go for a 5mm wetsuit and perhaps a body under your wetsuit. Especially in April, this can be nice to keep you warm since you will be sitting still during some dives.
Both tanks are available.
Standard diving is done with 80 cubic feet tanks, equivalent to 11-12 liter tanks. If you want a larger tank, you can rent a 100 cubic feet tank. This is about 13-14 liters and is therefore slightly smaller than a 15-liter tank. The cost to use a 100 cubic feet tank is 75 USD per week.
Do you really want a 15L tank? Then this costs 55 USD per day. Since you do a lot of dives where you are among sharks at 10 meters, it is enough for many people to dive with a 100 cubic feet.
For logistical reasons, Aggressor Liveaboards accepts only sidemount divers using a single-tank configuration.
Yes, you can dive here with nitrox. The additional cost is $100.
Yes, you can rent anything here. A complete set of equipment includes a bcd, regulator, computer, lamp, mask, fins and a snorkel. The cost is $175. A wetsuit is not included in the full kit, so you still need to reserve it separately. The cost for the entire week is $50. So in total you will pay $225.
It is always advisable to bring your own spare parts or a new battery for your dive computer. However, should something break, you can use the extra equipment available on the boat free of charge.
The liveaboard
Yes, all cabins have private bathrooms.
There is no WiFi, but there is Starlink. This is a a satellite Internet service that basically works the same as WiFi. You can use the Starlink for 40 USD and then have 8 GB of Internet. The nice thing is that you then have connection all over the boat, even in your cabin.
You spend almost the entire trip around Tiger Beach. This is in the middle of the sea and you won’t have normal coverage on your phone because of this.
