Diving in Egypt
Egypt is one of the world’s most popular destinations for diving and snorkeling because of its crystal clear waters and beautiful coral reefs. The country offers divers a wide range of opportunities, ranging from relaxed reef diving to challenging wreck diving and freediving. The following is a detailed description of all diving opportunities in Egypt.
Dive sites: Egypt has many dive sites along the Red Sea, but the most popular spots are Dahab, Marsa Alam, Hurghada and Safaga.
Coral reefs: Egypt is famous for its coral reefs that stretch along the entire Red Sea coastline. The reefs are pristine and full of life and provide habitat for numerous species of fish. The coral is colorful and forms beautiful formations ranging from soft corals to hard corals.
Marine life: Egypt is home to more than 1,200 species of fish, and 10% of the world’s fish population lives in the Red Sea. Divers can look forward to seeing large schools of reef fish, sharks, rays, dolphins, sea turtles, octopuses, seahorses and more. Some rare and unique species, such as the dugong or sea cow, can also be found in the Red Sea. Also, the thresher shark spotted on the liveaboard route BDE (Brothers, Daedelus and Elphinstone) is very unique to the region.
Wreck diving: Egypt also offers divers the opportunity to go wreck diving, where they can dive to historic World War I and World War II shipwrecks such as the Thistlegorm, the Carnatic and the Giannis D.
Freediving: Freedivers can visit Marsa Alam and the Blue Hole in Dahab, a famous dive site with a natural vertical tunnel where freedivers can test their skills.
Weather conditions: Weather conditions in Egypt are good year-round, with temperatures ranging between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius, depending on the season. The best time to dive is between March and November, when water temperatures are most pleasant and underwater visibility is best. Water temperatures range from 20 degrees Celsius in winter to 30 degrees Celsius in summer. The air temperature ranges from 25 degrees Celsius in winter to 45 degrees Celsius in summer.
Accommodations: Egypt offers numerous accommodations for divers, ranging from luxury resorts to tented camps right on the Red Sea. Most divers choose a liveaboard vacation in Egypt, at EWDR we have a large selection of resorts and liveaboards.
