Restoring corals in Kenya at REEFolution

Rosanne is a student at Wageningen University. She is in Kenya for her studies to research the social impact that coral restoration has on local communities. She is doing this research at REEFolution and staying with our own Harm at the Pilli Pipa Fire Fly Ocean Camp ! We asked Rosanne to share with us a few photos and cries from time to time about her time there.

Rosanne; Close to the border with Tanzania is the coastal town of Shimoni and opposite it the island of Wasini. In the channel between the mainland and the island, REEFolution is working and busy restoring coral reefs.

We are staying here in a little paradise, with both a pool and the ocean in our backyard. Each morning we start with a dive, placing structures, harvesting coral, planting coral pieces or cleaning the coral trees. Gardening underwater!

In the afternoon, we tinker with new structures or do computer work. In addition, every now and then we get lectures on the fish and benthos in this area, so we can recognize them underwater too!

Here at the compound, monkeys fly around your ears, squirrels run by, snakes swarm and the most beautiful birds of prey fly overhead.

Already on my first day of work, I saw dolphins swimming next to the boat! And we are also occasionally joined by a sea turtle as we work underwater.

Because you are sometimes working so intently underwater, it can sometimes be quite irritating but also funny when fish attack your hands or swim in the way all the time.

But then, of course, when you are laughing with colleagues at one thing or another, your glasses immediately fill up with water.

The location, the people, the weather and of course the diving make this internship a great experience here!
