Diving in Sudan
Sudan is one of the most pristine diving destinations in the world and is becoming increasingly popular among experienced divers seeking adventurous and unique diving experiences. Located on the Red Sea, Sudan offers an unparalleled underwater world with a wide range of marine species and unique topography.
Sudan’s waters are home to more than 400 species of coral found in colorful walls and in beautiful coral gardens. The reef is also home to several species of sharks, including hammerheads, whitetip reef sharks and gray reef sharks, as well as manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, barracudas and tuna.
One of the most special diving experiences Sudan has to offer are encounters with hammerhead sharks. Hammerhead sharks are found in many places in the Red Sea, but Sudan is one of the few places where divers can see them on a regular basis. They congregate in large schools near the outer reefs, where divers often come face to face with these majestic and fascinating creatures.
Another highlight of diving in Sudan is the chance to explore the wrecks of the seabed. Sudan has a rich maritime history and several wrecks can be found, including the Umbria, an Italian freighter that sank during World War II and has now become a beautiful artificial reef.
The diving season in Sudan runs from October through May, with the best conditions in the months of March and April. Water temperatures range from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, making it comfortable for year-round diving. Because Sudan’s dive sites are relatively undiscovered, it is a destination for experienced divers who are well-trained and experienced in open-water diving.
Diving in Sudan with Cousteau
Cousteau has ensured that Sudan is forever identified with diving. His Precontinent II Project can be found on Shaab Rumi and is well worth a dip. An experiment in living underwater. The shark cages and various other structures are still there, only they have now been taken over again by the original inhabitants.
