Diving in Honduras
Honduras, that’s a banana republic somewhere in Central America, right? Indeed, but that is only one side of Honduras. Besides bananas and coffee, Honduras has a very different side. There are places in Honduras that are well worth visiting. Like the famous Mayan Ruins of Copán. To the east lies the impenetrable jungle of Mosquita, whose inhabitants include its namesake inhabitants. Honduras is located in Central America between Nicaragua and Guatamala. The country has both a Pacific and Caribbean coast.
Diving At Roatan
You go to Honduras to dive, of course, and diving in Honduras is done primarily along the Caribbean coast.
A must of Honduras is diving at Bay Islands in the Caribbean reef with the islets of Utila, Roatan, Guanaja and Cayas Cochinos. In addition, there are 15 other small islands. Located some 50 kilometers off the coast, the islands are part of the world’s second-largest reef, which includes Belize. You will find rock formations, gorges and swim throughs. Healthy reefs, beautiful wrecks and, if you’re lucky, sharks, dolphins and whale sharks. There isn’t really a season for it; you have to have a little luck underwater, as always.
The coral is very varied with hard coral and sponges being the majority. Colorful reefs, wrecks and drop-offs. You won’t encounter large schools of fish but there is a wide variety of species and critters.
Hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, troopers, seahorses are frequently encountered. The underwater hills, such as Black Hills and Coco’s Sea Mounts, are also insanely colorful.
Diving sites worth recommending are: CJ’s Drop Off, Hole in the wall and lighthouse/Dixies/Moolight and the Odyssy shipwreck. And finally, there are whale sharks that pass by during the migration season, and with the sea temperature around 26 degrees, it is a great place to dive.
Diving with dolphins near Honduras
If you stay overnight at the Anthony’s Key Resort you are sure to encounter dolphins.
