Diving in Mexico
For wreck lovers, diving on Truk is Walhalla. There are more than 400 ship and aircraft wrecks on the bottom of the Truk Atoll. Truk was an important naval base for the Japanese. The Japanese thought Truk was too far away for an American attack. That is why the air attack came as a total surprise, they lost 45 ships and 275 planes. It was like Japan’s Pearl Harbor.
Wreck Diving Truk
Since then there have been 70 ships and 400 aircraft on the bottom, some of them still in excellent condition. On these wrecks are still aircraft that were going to be transported and in the cargo hold are transport trucks. In the mess is preserved officer’s china. Warm, clear and mostly current-free water are ideal conditions for diving on the wrecks of Truk. The most popular wreck is the Fujikawa Maru. The ship is very photogenic, especially because of the cannons on the front deck. The cargo is fairly intact, so you can find Zero planes in the hold.

Opportunities Diving Truk
To dive on Truk, or Chuuk, there are several options. It is possible to both dive on Truk and sleep in a hotel or with a liveaboard. For people who want to take a tour around the island after two or three dives on Truk, or eat somewhere different every night, a hotel is the best option. Those who want maximum diving on Truk, with short transfer times are well placed on a liveaboard.
Who is diving on Truk for?
Since there are many wrecks in the lagoon, this place is suitable for wreck divers or lovers of wrecks. There are wrecks for every level: some wrecks start already at a depth of 10 meters, others have the deepest point around 30 meters. But there are also quite a few wrecks that are deeper and that you can reach only if you are trained in technical diving.
About Truk Lagoon
Is it Truk or Chuuk?
Perhaps a bit confusing, but the country is now officially called Chuuk. The name was changed in 1990 from Truk (or Truk Lagoon) to Chuuk, which is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. However, the name “Truk” is still often used in the context of diving and the famous World War II shipwrecks. Hence, we still use the name Truk. You actually see this with all liveaboard boats and dive organizations.
Where is Truk Lagoon located?
Located in the central Pacific Ocean, Truk Lagoon is part of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It is located about 1,800 km northeast of New Guinea and is a large archipelago surrounded by a barrier reef. Truk has mountainous islands and a series of islands with mangroves. The eialnd Weno is the state capital.
How can Truk be reached?
From Europe, Truk can be reached via Manila and Guam. The trip is long and therefore a combination with Yap, Palau and or the Philippines is obvious. Micronesia’s airline, Continental Micronesia Airlines, has inexpensive combination fares to visit Truk with Palau and Yap in one vacation.
