When and where do you spot whale sharks?
Whale sharks migrate long distances and their presence at certain locations is strongly related to food supply and water temperature. Whale sharks follow the plankton, small fish and larvae that in turn grow at specific currents and seasons.
The seasons when you see whale sharks usually coincide with periods of increased plankton production. For example, during coral spawning season or when cold or warm ocean currents bring in nutrient-rich water. As a result, whale sharks temporarily gather in those places to eat.
In addition, whale sharks like warm, tropical to subtropical water, usually between 21 and 30 degrees Celsius. They avoid cold water, making them only sporadic in temperate areas.
In short, their migrations are a clever strategy to always be in the best places where there is enough food, making it possible to spot them better in certain months and areas.
