Diving vacation Wadi Lahami

Located 10 km south of the village of Hamata, Wadi Lahami is one of the last signs of civilization before the border with Sudan, which is about 300 km further south. Wadi Lahami offers a unique way to experience the beauty of the region.

Wadi Lahami is secluded, simple but comfortable, with a warm team ready to welcome you. Experience all your favorite activities, but in the most natural environment: kite surfing, diving, snorkeling, bird watching or just relaxing close to nature.

Wadi Lahami offers pristine dive sites in the Red Sea with world-class hard coral formations. The reef system has several dive sites for all levels, including Fury Shoals, wrecks and drop-offs. The area has both popular and lesser-known dive sites, suitable for divers, snorkelers and free divers. Satayah Reef, a world-famous reef, is less than an hour’s boat ride from Wadi Lahami and known for sometimes as many as 80 to 100 spinner dolphins. An encounter with the dolphins here is a special experience for life.

The protected mangrove area north of the village is one of the largest in the Middle East. It is home to many species of birds, both waders and shorebirds, which nest and nest in the mangrove swamps. It is common to see nesting ospreys, herons and sometimes the spoonbill, as well as smaller birds such as swallows, stonechat, pipits, wagtails and kingfishers. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, especially in the months of migration. Mangroves are protected along the Red Sea coast because of the rich and varied flora and fauna they shelter, and the area here is no exception.

Wadi Lahami is a truly unique place that you have to experience to believe it.

Best travel time: Diving in the Red Sea is possible year-round. Usually the sea is slightly calmer between September and May and visibility is best then. In the summer months, the water temperature is most pleasant.

At Wadi Lahami, you can also kitesurf very well. Kitesurfing at Wadi Lahami is unlike anywhere else. The Red Sea is known for its perfect kitesurfing conditions – shallow lagoons and year-round winds make it the ideal playground for experienced kiters and a perfect learning spot for beginners. Although some of the more well-known spots have become overcrowded, Wadi Lahami Kitesurfing Centre remains intimate and welcoming with no shortage of space on the water. The bay is large but quiet and private with a lagoon with sandy bottom directly in front of the beach.

Wetsuit advice for the Red Sea

In the summer months a 3mm is sufficient, but in the heart of winter a 7mm is wiser. In between, a 5mm will suffice.

Day 1

Today your diving vacation to Egypt begins. Your flight to Marsa Alam from many airports in europe. The flight takes about 5.5 hours to Marsa Alam.

Once you are through passport control, have arranged your visa and picked up your luggage from the belt you will arrive in the arrivals hall. Here a Wadi Lahami staff member is already waiting for you. In about 2.5 hours you will drive, south towards Sudan along the coast of the Red Sea, to the diving resort.

Arriving you check in and settle comfortably into your Royal Tent where you will “camp” very comfortably this week.

Day 2 to 6 - Diving in the southern Red Sea

The diving package in Wadi Lahami is designed for maximum diving pleasure in the famous Fury Shoals area. In total, you can make 20 boat dives over the next few days. To wit 4 dives per day: 2 guided dives to the Fury Shoals + 1 unguided afternoon dive to a dive site in Zone 1 + 1 unguided night dive on Torfa per day.

Fury Shoals is a popular Red Sea dive site known for its pristine coral formations and diversity of dive sites, including canyons, passages, wrecks, coral gardens and drop-offs. It is suitable for divers of all levels and also offers snorkeling and free diving opportunities.

Torfa is the house reef. The rib will drop you off at a certain point and you can dive northeast and return after 30 minutes or go southwest and return to the boat after 30 minutes. The boat will drop you off in front of the reef at a place where you will find small pools with a sandy bottom at a depth of about 12 meters. This is also the night dive site where you can find Spanish dancers and many other active night fish, among others.

Popular dive sites in Zone 1 include: Shabrour South, with beautiful coral gardens, nudis and perhaps something big in blue. Habili Daisy, a small garden about 30m wide where photographers can shoot to their heart’s content. Ras Bonny, this reef is close to Daisy and is the closest reef to the village after Torfa. The reef forms a long coral block with three pinnacle-like sections in a straight line coming from north to south. These parts are actually connected and the summit reaches from 7-14m. The reef is inhabited by an enormous abundance of reef fish.

Good to know: In Wadi Lahami, you only do boat dives with high-performance ribs. Side diving is not possible.

Day 7 - Luxor, Kitesurfing, Bird watching....

Today you won’t be diving, but that doesn’t mean the vacation is over. On the contrary, today you can explore Egypt above water. There are several excursion options such as a day trip to Luxor. This is a unique opportunity to see something of Egypt’s historical culture. Departing at 3:30 in the morning and returning in time for dinner, you will have the opportunity to visit the following highlights: Valley of the Kings on the West Bank, Hatshepsut Temple, Memnon Colossi, 15-minute Tour on the Nile, Visit the East Bank and Karnak Temple

Are you crazy about birds? Then book a Bird Watching excursion. Wadi Lahami Village is next to a protected mangrove area with one of the best areas for bird watching along the Red Sea coast. Many waders and shorebirds nest and nest near the mangrove swamps. These include the white heron, night heron, cross-billed heron and sometimes the spoonbill. The sooty falcon is a possible visitor in summer, not to mention, of course, the magnificent ospreys that nest here. In summer, the white-eyed gull can be seen well, as can the white-cheeked gull and the giant tern. The gull is special because its breeding range is limited to the Red Sea. In the fall and spring, thousands of small birds such as swallows, stonechat, pipits, wagtails and kingfishers can be seen.

Of course, kitesurfing is definitely one of the options as well. You can take full kitesurfing courses here, book a one-hour refresher and rent equipment.

Day 8 - Return home or extension

The relaxing diving vacation is already over. Today you will be transferred back to Marsa Alam airport to fly back home.

It is also possible to extend your diving vacation with, for example, a liveaboard departing from Marsa Alam towards southern St. Lucia. Johns or the shark paradise NDE. It is also possible to take a beautiful cultural tour of Egypt. For example, visit the pyramids at Luxor or sail down the Nile on a traditional felucca (sailing ship).
