Diving on Zanzibar

Diving in Zanzibar means diving in a fascinating underwater world of pristine reefs surrounded by barracudas, marlin, turtles and lots of tropical fish and sometimes even a reef shark or curious dolphins.

It is a diver’s paradise, with an average water temperature of 27C. An abundance of hard and soft coral, many nudibranchs, scorpion fish and seahorses, to name just a few that can be spotted while diving. Sometimes you enjoy visibility up to 30 meters here.

Daily sailings are made to nearby reefs where you can make beautiful dives, as well as dive sites further away such as Mmnemba Island.

Diving will take place from shore and boat with East African Divers. There are a total of more than 18 dive sites that are dived regularly.

Best travel time Zanzibar: Diving conditions are good all year round, yet the months of September, October, November, March and April are ideal because there are fewer tourists. High season is in July, August and December.

Zanzibar’s archipelago consists of two islands. Unguja, commonly called Zanzibar and Pemba Island. The archipelago lies about 50 miles off the coast of Tanzania, close to the equator.

Zanzibar has been an important trading point for hundreds of years. Arab, Persian and Indian traders visited the island with their wooden dhows across the Indian Ocean.

Zanzibar is also known as the spice island. Cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, lemongrass, ginger and nutmeg are all grown on Zanzibar’s plantations.

Today, Zanzibar is a pristine destination for divers, with a number of world-class dive sites with healthy and intact corals.

Wetsuit advice for Zanzibar

Between November and May a 3mm wetsuit will suffice, the other months a 5mm is probably more comfortable.

Day 1

Today you will depart for Zanzibar. There are flights to Zanzibar from many airports in europe. Sometimes direct, but usually with a transfer. If you fly direct, the flight time is about 9 hours. Are you flying with a layover? Then the travel time is about 14 to 16 hours. The latter means you often don’t arrive on Zanzibar until the next day.

If you would like to fly direct, you can do so with KLM on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. These flights are often more expensive than a stopover flight.

Day 2 - Arrival on Zanzibar

Today you will arrive on Zanzibar. For Tanzania you need a visa, you can arrange this in advance to get through customs quickly. It is also possible to buy your visa at the airport for 50 euros or $50, they don’t make a difference in that on Zanzibar ;).

After passing through passport control you can pick up your luggage from the belt and the Langi Langi driver will be waiting to take you to the beach resort. Langi Langi sits at the northernmost tip of Zanzibar and the drive takes about 1.5 hours. Along the way, you get well acquainted with Zanzibar, catching glimpses of the capital Stonetown and also seeing Zanzibar’s “countryside” right away.

Upon arrival at the Langi Langi Beach Resort, check in and then enjoy a wonderful day off. Relax by the pool, explore the long sandy beaches or head into the town of Nungwi.

Day 3 to 7 - Diving on Zanzibar

It’s time to go diving! Over the next 5 days you will make 2 boat dives each day. The diving school, East Africa Diving, is about a 5-minute walk from Langi Langi. Through the beach you can walk to the diving school. Good to know; you can keep your dive gear at the diving school. That saves dragging back and forth!

There will be 2 dives in the morning, gathering at 08:15. You’ll be back before lunch, unless you go to Mnemba Island. There are some 18 dive sites in all. You can reach most of them in 15 minutes. Mnemba Island is about a 50-minute boat ride away.

Some of the dive sites:

Hunga Reef: This shallow reef (16m) is just a short boat ride from the dive center. In the beautiful coral formations you will find crocodile fish, stone fish and scorpion fish and many different species of flatworms and nudibranchs.

Chakatuni: An elongated coral formation at a depth of 20 m with lots of reef fish, the occasional turtle and some amazing soft and hard corals.

Leon Wall: A dive site for the more experienced diver at a depth of up to 30 meters. Sometimes you can see dolphins during your dive, very often turtles.

Kichafi & Haji: A reef running parallel to the northeast coast from 10m to 18m. A wide variety of hard and soft corals. Many different coral fish and green turtles are encountered here.

Kichwani Spot (Mnemba): Many colorful coral formations with an abundance of tropical reef fish. Large Napoleon Fish, Reef Shark, Trumpet Fish, Trevally and Grouper, Oriental Sweetlips and Rays.

The Big Wall (Mnemba): Deep dive for experienced divers only. Reef Sharks, schools of large Barracudas, Rays and Tuna. Due to the current, often an exciting drift dive.

Wattabomi (Mnemba): A dive site suitable for novice and advanced divers with a depth of 15 to 25 m. You will see coral devils, moray eels, stingrays, octopuses and large groupers, among others.

Day 8 & 9 - Relax, explore and return home

Somewhat depending on the flight times, you will go home late tonight and arrive in Europe the next day. The last day you can choose to relax or go on an excursion to Stonetown, for example, where you can participate in the Spice tour & prison island tour (approx. $100). There is also a Stonetown Walking Tour (about $70). Do you like animals a lot? Then Cheetah’s Rock is also highly recommended, this is a wildlife rescue center. If you do the “Great Wildlife Tour” ($160,- p.p.) you might be able to feel the fur of a trapped cheetah, smell the breath of a lion (so close!), feed lemurs and pet zebras. You can also go swimming with otters ($150). Please note that these are all rescued animals and not animals brought into captivity for entertainment. Animal welfare is paramount.
