Diving on Cozumel
Located in the Mexican-Caribbean coastal zone, Cozumel is surrounded by a complex ecosystem of coral reefs. Part of a huge chain of reefs stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to Honduras, it is the second largest barrier reef system in the world.
Cozumel is considered one of the best dive sites on the planet for many reasons. One of those reasons is undoubtedly the perfect visibility in the turquoise water, it reaches up to 50 meters. Divers can explore beautiful coral formations, fascinating walls, slopes and many passages. It has been said that Cozumel is the drift diving capital of the world.
Cozumel is a perfect dive site not only for experienced divers but also for beginners. You can even learn to dive very well here.
The coral in Cozumel is very colorful and there is abundant sponge growth. It is bursting with marine life such as eagle rays, barracudas and the native Cozumel Splendid Toad Fish. Cozumel is home to about 500 species of fish, 60 species of coral, 350 mollusks and marine mammals, algae and sea grass. More than 30 dive sites are waiting to be discovered and most are located along the west coast and the southern end of the island.
On Cozumel, we do business with ProDive International. They are located on the terreing of Allegro, the four-star hotel where you are staying this vacation. Next to the Allegro is the Occidental, its more luxurious sister. This is a 5* hotel with also an establishment of ProDive ánd All-Inclusive concept.

Wetsuit advice for Cozumel, Mexico
Generally a 3mm is sufficient, possibly a 5mm could be considered in the months when the water is 27C for divers who get cold quickly.

Day 1
Today you will fly to Cancun. There are many flights from europe to Cancun and the flight time is about 11 hours. Most flights arrive in Mexico during the afternoon, then there is still enough to travel on to Cozumel on the same day.
At the airport, someone from Pro Dive, the dive shop, will be waiting for you. By car, they will take you to the ferry in Playa del Carmen. The drive to Playa del Carmen from Cancun takes about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Arriving at the ferry, the driver will give you tickets for the ferry and then you will cross to Cozumel by boat in about 20 minutes. There are ferries every half hour, so you never wait very long.
At the port in Cozumel, someone will already be waiting for you to take you to your hotel on the island. This ride takes another 20 minutes or so.
After such a long trip you must be tired, settle back in your room, take and shower and then explore the resort. You stay on an All-Inclusive basis, and that means cocktails are included too!
Will you be at the hotel before 5 p.m.? Then stop by the dive shop to make arrangements. ProDive’s dive center at the hotel is open between 08:00 and 17:00.
Day 2 - Check-in at the dive center and first boat dives
This morning before noon you will go to ProDive’s dive center located on the hotel grounds. It is important to arrange all the paperwork with the dive shop before diving and, if applicable, pick out diving equipment. Everything settled? Then it’s time to board one of the dive boats and make two beautiful dives in the afternoon today.
Four boat dives are offered daily, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Between dives you will always return to the resort unless otherwise indicated. If a night dive is scheduled, there are even 5 dives to be made in one day. In this trip you will make 2 boat dives per day. Up to you whether you prefer morning or afternoon diving.
Day 3 to 6 - Boat dives
Over the next four days you will make 2 boat dives each day. All diving takes place in the Cozumel Marine Park. No fishing is allowed here and the coral is beautiful. Keep your eyes open because nurse sharks, eagle rays, stingrays and several beautiful tropical fish species are part of what you may encounter on a dive.

Day 7 - Relax or the Punta Sur Eco Park
The last day, before you fly, you cannot dive. You can spend the day relaxing by the pool or beach … or book another cool excursion to the Punta Sur Eco Park, for example. The ecological park “Punta Sur” is a protected area whose area exceeds a thousand hectares, where lagoon systems that form a mosaic of great diversity and wealth of flora and fauna predominate. This is the ideal place for nature lovers.
Tour Schedule:
9:30 a.m. – Departure from Allegro
09:40 a.m. – Departure from Occidental
10:00 a.m. – entrance at Punta Sur Eco beach park.
10:15 am – first stop at the LAGOON OBSERVATORY is a wooden path with a tower (There is a good chance of seeing crocodiles here! ;)))
10:20 a.m. – arrival at EL FARO – stop at the lighthouse where you can enjoy 1 hour between climbing the lighthouse to take pictures and visiting the museum of the lighthouse keeper’s house
11:30 am – arrival at the beach – the snorkeling site is a shallow reef with lots of marine life such as angelfish, yellow grunts, lobsters, beautiful fan corals
12:30 p.m. – lunch on the beach. Lunch includes 2 soft drinks and a dish of fajitas (chicken/meat/fish/vegetarian/or mixed).
1 hour relaxing on the beach after lunch. SIESTA TIME!
2:45 p.m. – quietly back toward the hotel.
Please note that this is a smoke-free park and you can only use cash to pay for extras.
Day 8 - Home
Alas, the trip is over. Today you will take the ferry back to Playa del Carmen and continue by car to Cancun where the plane is waiting for you to fly back to the Netherlands.
Expand your trip: Depending on the time of year, you can do several additional activities from Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras, among others.
