Belize is a true paradise for divers. This is partly because here is the second largest barrier reef in the world: the Belize Barrier Reef. <\/strong>A barrier reef is a large coral reef that lies parallel to the coast, but is separated from it by open water. It forms a natural barrier, so to speak, between the open sea and the land. <\/p>

Think wall diving with steep drop-offs adorned with red gorgonians and giant elephant-ear sponges. You’ll explore the remote Lighthouse Reef<\/strong> and the protected Half Moon Caye<\/strong>, among others, where morays, crawfish and dart crabs hide in every crevice, tunnel and cave. <\/p>

And, of course, the world-famous Blue Hole, <\/strong>which is on the bucket list of many divers. This circular sinkhole is some 300 meters wide, 124 meters deep and is filled with giant stalacites that you swim past. <\/p>

The marine life is exceptionally rich and varied. Schools of parrotfish, eagle rays and turtles color the shallow reefs, while pelagic species such as hammerheads, nurse sharks and large jacks often show themselves in the deeper zones. <\/p>

Diving in Belize is actually possible all year round, but the best months for a liveaboard<\/strong> are from March through June<\/strong>. During this period, the sea is calm, visibility is often over 30 meters and marine life is most active. You then have the greatest chance of seeing pelagic species such as sharks, rays and spawning groupers.
