Diving in Mozambique
For divers, Mozambique is truly a top destination. Diving in Mozambique, that means: greatest encounters. Diving among big fish by day and chatting in the evening over a local beer and the famous chicken piri piri.
- Versatile diving
- Big fish
- Kruger Park is on the route
- Lots of mantas
Diving in Mozambique
Mozambique is now known as a spectacular (diving) destination. Quite rightly, this destination is increasingly frequented by lovers of big fish. Especially if you go diving at Tofo you will go to see manta rays and whale sharks. It is not unusual to see fifteen manta rays on a dive to a cleaning station! The record stands at 110 manta rays and 17 whale sharks in six days. Besides the two “top prizes,” there is much else on display that requires superlatives to describe them. Think reef sharks, various ray species, leopard sharks, turtles, schools of large fish and humpback whales. You are most likely to encounter them from June through September.
Vilanculos and Tofo are two of the most popular dive sites in Mozambique.
Vilanculos is located in the central part of Mozambique and has a number of excellent dive sites. One of the most popular is Two Mile Reef, located about two miles offshore and known for its wide variety of coral species and abundant marine life, including manta rays, sharks and sea turtles. Other popular dive sites in Vilanculos include Neptune’s Arm, Fingers and Magaruque Island.
Tofo, located in southern Mozambique, is also a fantastic diving destination. Probably the most famous feature of Tofo is the whale shark, which can be found in the area from October to March, offering divers the chance to get a closer look at these majestic creatures. Other common marine animals that can be seen while diving in Tofo are dolphins, rays, turtles and several species of sharks. There are also several wreck dives available in Tofo, including the famous “Manta Reef” and “Jangamo Bay.”
Safari in the Kruger Park
After diving in Mozambique, it would be a shame to skip a safari in the Kruger Park. After all, the Kruger is on the route. In addition to Mozambique’s big game underwater, you can look for the big game of the savannah. An ideal combination to make the most of your diving vacation!
