The best activities in the rainforest of Belize
After a week of diving on the tropical coast of Belize, you can round off a trip well with a few days in the rainforest of Belize. There is an immense amount to see and do. We tip our favorite activities here.
Ziplines
Take an adventure ride through the treetops of the jungle in Belize! There are several zipline tours for every skill level. You start high above the forest floor, well secured with a harness and protected by helmet and gloves. Then you zipline over steel cables from one platform to another. A thrilling experience with breathtaking views and a unique perspective of the rainforest – an experience you won’t get anywhere else!
River tubing
In need of an adrenaline rush? Go river tubing down the Macal River and whiz past the sounds and colors of the rainforest! Starting a mile above the lodge, you’ll begin your journey through rapids and deep pools back toward the lodge. Along the way, you’ll encounter a few small rapids, but the real highlight awaits at the end: the Black Rock Waterfall. You can go over the waterfall, an optional challenge for tubers. And the best part: stay on your tube and enjoy a free rum punch!
Guided canoeing & kayaking
Be taken along 10 kilometers of the Macal River, past gentle rapids and lush green rainforest. Nature guides will point out the different types of animals that live in and along the river.
For a quieter trip, enjoy a guided canoeing experience! Let our guides do the paddling while you sit back and enjoy the scenery.
The kayaks are single-seater and perfect if you want to explore the bends and twists of the river on your own. With this option, you are at the helm yourself, but a guide is still present.
Wildside hike
Take a walk on the wild trail to the Don Elijio Panti National Park. The biodiversity of this area is matched only by the unique history of the park itself. Elijio Panti, for whom the park is named, was widely considered the last Maya master healer of Belize. As you zigzag through the mountains, you will learn about many medicinal plants Dr. Panti used to heal people and the history of the Itzamna community. You can also spot wildlife and a huge variety of bird species in this beautiful Belizean reserve. The highlight of the hike is reaching the large viewpoint on the EP summit, with spectacular views of the Black Rock valley and surrounding mountains.
Night hike
Are you a real night owl? Put on your hiking boots and head into the jungle – our night hike is for you! An experienced guide will take you through the rainforest and point out nocturnal animals such as tarantulas, snakes, the red-eyed tree frog and many more.
Would you prefer something more comfortable? Then opt for a night drive, where guides show off the forest’s nocturnal inhabitants. We are tracking owls, foxes, feral cats and more!
Flour Camp Cave
Combine your hiking adventure with an exciting cave exploration! Flour Camp Cave is full of Mayan artifacts and impressive geological formations that will surprise any explorer. The adventure continues after the cave as we hike to an unexcavated Maya temple and remnants in the rainforest.
Birding
Black Rock’s beautiful location on the banks of the Macal River makes it a paradise for bird lovers. In winter, the number of birds doubles as migratory birds fly south from Canada and the US. At Black Rock you can spot hummingbirds, toucans, parrots, the rare and endangered Orange-breasted Falcon, woodpeckers and more – the list is endless! To date, as many as 320 different bird species have been recorded in and around Black Rock Lodge.
Take a walk up to the Bird Tower and enjoy panoramic views of the area. With a little luck, you’ll discover all these beautiful birds up close here!
