Alor is high on our list of best diving destinations in Indonesia. That’s exactly why we’re going here in September 2026! With our group trip led by Robbert, you have the chance to discover this beautiful area.
Alor is located east of Komodo and Flores and is known for its spectacular coral reefs and enormous biodiversity. You can encounter strong currents here, but this is more than compensated by the impressive marine life and beautiful scenery above water. Alor is also a paradise for macro lovers. The volcanic island offers excellent muck diving and is home to one of the largest anemone fields in the world.
And did you know that Alor is a lot less known among divers and travelers compared to Bali and Raja Ampat? This is precisely why it is still quite unspoiled and delivers dives that will surprise you at least as much as the well-known places, maybe even more.
We will spend 8 days diving here, enjoying everything the underwater world has to offer us. Then we will also go during the right period to spot different whales. From June to November, different whale species migrate past Alor. So we have a good chance of spotting pygmy blue whales (the second largest animal that ever lived) as well as sperm whales, the ocean’s largest predators.
A special location well worth the travel!

Day 1 & 2 | Trip to Alor
September 23 & 24, 2026 | Trip to Alor
Today the journey to Alor begins. It is a beautiful destination, but also quite remote. As a result, you will spend 2 days on the road to the destination.
The first flight will take you to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Depending on the arrival time, a day hotel is arranged. This is because the domestic flight to Alor leaves at 02:00 at night. This flight takes about 4 hours, so we arrive early in the morning. We fly over the many islands of Indonesia and have a beautiful view of this area.
Day 3 | Arrival in Alor
Sept. 25, 2026 | Arrival in Alor
We land at Mali Airport, Alor’s small airport. Nestled between the hills and the sea, the airport is spectacular in its own right. A transfer is waiting for us, taking us to Moko Alor Dive Resort in about 45 minutes. The resort is a secluded haven and a perfect place for diving. We stay in bungalows with garden views.
Day 4 to 11 | Diving in Alor
September 26 to October 3, 2026 | Diving in Alor
We have 8 diving days this group trip, during which we can dive as much as we want. Each day we make 2 boat dives in the morning and in the afternoon we can do unlimited dives on the house reef.
On this trip, we’ll do a mix of reef diving, wall diving, drift diving and muck diving, allowing you to explore the best of Alor. Around Kalabahi Bay you will find brilliant macro-critters, such as shrimps, coral crabs and all sorts of small sea creatures that you can spot with a keen eye. In Pantar Strait, we dive impressive reef walls and pass larger fish, from barracudas to sharks, often with excellent visibility and sometimes strong currents.
The resort’s house reef is a diving paradise in itself: colorful coral gardens, huge fields of anemones and schools of tropical fish. Here you can also regularly encounter sea turtles, rays and even dolphins. For those lucky enough, whales or mola mola occasionally show up. Each of the more than 60 dive sites in the region has something special to offer, making every dive a new discovery. Alor is known for its pristine underwater world and spectacular biodiversity, and this trip gives you the chance to experience that for yourself.
The daily program is as follows:
- At 07:00 we can go to the restraurant for breakfast before heading out on the water.
- We leave by boat at 08:00 to make 2 dives. Depending on the day’s dive sites, we will have the surface interval on the boat or at the resort.
- Around 1 p.m. we return to the resort after making 2 dives. And we are lucky: lunch is served after the dive so we can sit down immediately
- After lunch we can get back into the water. We have the house reef at our disposal and can dive here as we like. These are dives without a guide, but fortunately we have a group full of dive buddies! The house reef is open until 6 p.m.
- At 7 p.m. dinner will be served and we can chat about everything we saw underwater that day.
- There is also the possibility of night diving, both on the house reef and by boat. These night dives are not standard included in our dive package.
Day 12 | Whale watching: in search of pygmy blue whales
October 4 | Whale watching
We can no longer go diving, but something else special is on the program: whale watching! By boat we will actively search for these impressive animals. If conditions allow and our guides advise, there is even the possibility of snorkeling or freediving next to the whales, which is an absolutely fantastic experience.
We are in the right period in Alor when it comes to whale migration. From June to November, different species of whales pass by, so we have a chance to spot these special, and especially large, animals. We have a good chance to see the pygmy blue whales. after the blue whale, this is the largest animal ever. These whales average 24 meters in length! By comparison, that’s as big as 2 buses – and twice the size of a whale shark.
We also have a good chance of encountering sperm whales. These are the largest predators in the ocean. Many whales are plankton eaters, but this giant prefers giant squid, octopus and rays.
Throughout the year you may also encounter short-finned pilot whales, melon-headed whales, spotted dolphins, spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. And with luck, even a whale shark or orca will show up.
Day 13 & 14 | Return home
October 5 & 6 | Back home
After a special and enjoyable group trip on Alor, it is unfortunately time to say goodbye. Today we will be taken back to the airport and fly back home via Bali, full of beautiful memories and stories of the underwater world we discovered together. We arrive back at our destination airport the next day.
Highlights of this trip
What can you expect from the underwater world in Alor?
Coral diversity & anemones
The reefs around Alor are among the most impressive in Indonesia. Here you will find a huge variety of hard and soft corals, colorful coral gardens and gigantic fields of anemones, one of the largest in the region. The reef is bursting with life: huge schools of fusiliers and anthias, colorful parrotfish shooting among the coral, and rare species such as mandarin fish. The combination of pristine coral and exceptional biodiversity makes every dive a unique experience.
In search of macro life
Alor is a paradise for macro lovers. Especially in Kalabahi Bay and other muck dive sites, you will find a huge variety of small, fascinating creatures: shrimp, coral crabs, mandarin fish, pygmy seahorses and countless nudibranchs. With a keen eye and a camera, you’ll discover hidden wonders here that you won’t find anywhere else. This microcosm of the reef is beautiful for photographers and lovers of fine, unusual marine life, but keep in mind that there is a current on many dives.
Whale watching
An experience where you realize how small you yourself actually are, that’s what an encounter with a pygmy blue whale entails. These 24-meter-long giants migrate past Alor, giving us the chance to spot these whales. Sperm whales also migrate during this period, they are slightly smaller at 16 meters, but just as impressive. A day of whale watching is an absolutely special experience. There is also the chance to see groups of dolphins playing or curious short-finned pilot whales.

We recommend being at least Advanced certified with at least 50 logged dives. The current here can be very strong, so it is good to have experience in that area.
Dives are made with quite a bit of current, making it not necessarily the best or easiest destination for underwater photographers.
This depends on the dive site. Most dive sites are nearby and no more than 20 minutes boat ride away.
